Other Commitments Per GM’s Sustainability Report

General Motors’ Sustainability Report was recently released, reporting on the company’s recent successes, and providing information about new upcoming initiatives for future mobility – including alternative propulsion and autonomous vehicles, along with connectivity and car sharing. GM’s CEO Mary Barra said:

“We see tremendous potential in these technologies and the long-term benefits for our customers and communities around the world. The GM team is looking to lead this transformation of personal mobility and will continue to deliver on our commitment to responsible manufacturing.”

Alternative propulsion includes all-electric vehicles, hybrids and plug-in hybrids, among other more future technologies like solar and hydrogen. The newly released second-gen Volt has upped power and efficiency. The Bolt EV enters the market at the end of this year as an affordable car for the masses that is all-electric, with long-range capability.

Barra, in a letter to GM stock investors, said that the auto industry will see more adaptation in the next five years than it has in the last fifty. She wrote:

“This gives us an unprecedented opportunity to develop cleaner, safer, smarter and more environmentally friendly vehicles for our customers . . . By putting truly cutting-edge technology within the reach of so many customers, Bolt EV cracks the code of affordability and long range.”

Mindy Lubber, president of Ceres, a nonprofit advocating for sustainability leadership shared:

“GM is quickly and appropriately adapting its business to our rapidly changing world, from addressing climate change through public policy advocacy to helping move electric vehicles into the mainstream.”

GM is reporting that nine of its models are now at 40 MPG or better EPA, up from six in last year’s report. Electrified vehicle sales are up nine percent.

Recent Accomplishments

  • Achieved 131 landfill-free facilities toward a goal of 150
  • Reduced total waste by 22 percent toward a goal of 40 percent
  • Reduced water intensity by 10 percent toward a goal of 15 percent
  • Reduced energy and carbon intensity by 14 percent and 15 percent, respectively, toward a goal of 20 percent
  • Earned certified wildlife habitats at half of GM’s manufacturing operations

GM has launched carsharing programs under the Maven name in Ann Arbor, MI, Chicago, New York City, Germany and China. All of this came after the company invested in ridesharing service, Lyft. The “fastest-growing ridesharing company in the U.S.”, according to the report.

The company just started a new Autonomous and Technology Development department, coupled with the company’s recent acquisition of autonomous driving startup Cruise Automation. The previously mentioned 2017 Cadillac CT6 will utilize the acquired startup’s technology to offer hands-free driving options.

GM is working hard to use more renewable energy and reduce the “carbon footprint”. Deals are in place in Texas and Mexico for wind turbines. The company has already generated $1 billion due to recycling and/or reuse. All of this has generated $237 million in savings since 2010. The Dow Jones Sustainability Index granted GM the only company in North America to earn perfect scores on climate change disclosure.

Love them or hate them you have to admit that they have come a long way from the Hummer days.

Around here (Kansas) when you drive by a Chevrolet Dealership, all you see is a hundred Trucks lined up in front. I really don’t understand why someone would want to pay for the fuel to drive a truck to and from work.

I understand trucks have their place, I’ve got one parked in my driveway, but it just doesn’t make financial sense to make a truck a commuter car. Not to mention, the ride in my Volt is far superior.

GM Sustainability Reports, sure have a similar ring to VW Group’s BEV PR releases…

The difference is one is a historical report while the other is just future projections.

GM walked the walk when it came to PHEVs and EVs, you are entitled to not choose their vehicles, but honestly, debate the facts and tone down the smugness.

They did what they had to do, for CARB compliance. Nothing more. Try getting a SparkEV in a non-CARB compliant State. I rest my oh-so ‘smug’ case.

As for smugness, you’re right. It’s easy to be smug when you see a US Automaker following in the SAME footsteps of VW Group’s Diesel Gate Scandal:

Cry to me again about them doing right by EV’s and PHEVs. Pft. I’ll buy that BS Propaganda after they start investing in DCFC stations for their vehicles.

Well, I know that my Volt lets me do my 38 mile work commute entirely on electric, something my Prius couldn’t.

And should I need to visit friends and relatives out of town, I can just run on the gas engine in it, reducing the need for a second car for that purpose.

Sure, it won’t work for everyone. But it works great for me as a commuter car and for long distance travel, until charging infrastructure and more affordable, longer ranged EV’s catch up.
