Meet the brand new black Metrocab taxi for London developed by Frazer-Nash and Ecotive.

“The British designed, engineered and built Metrocab, from Mytchett Surrey-based Ecotive and Frazer-Nash, is a new generation zero-emissions electric-powered taxi for London, and represents the cutting edge of green transport technology with a design both evolutionary and sympathetic to the iconic black cab silhouette.”

The range-extended electric taxi was presented recently to London Mayor and appeared on streets for trials. Finally we know the full specifications.

According to the press release, such taxi will be over three times more fuel efficient than the current London taxi and with >75 mpg and will have combined range of over 560 km (350 miles).

Metrocab can take six passengers (plus optional seventh passenger seat in the frunk front).

Metrocab Chairman Sir Charles Masefield said:

The all-new Range Extended Electric Metrocab has been in development since the mid-2000s with several prototypes built and over a million kilometres of engineering tests completed.  Instantly recognisable as an iconic London Hackney Cab, with a panoramic glass roof for views of the city, our new all-British London cab offers, for no price premium, completely new levels of economy, emissions and passenger comfort and is ready to enter service this year, benefitting the passenger, driver, city and environment alike.”

Ecotive and Frazer-Nash ensures that Metrocab will be priced competitively to enter the taxi market in London and other cities in UK and internationally after the trials.

Metrocab’s curb weight is 1,750kg (3858 lbs). Top speed is limited to 80 mph. In all-electric mode, the taxi is powered by a 12.2 kWh “Lithium-ion polymer large format cells“. Metrocab probably will be able to drive 40-50 km before the 1 litre petrol range-extender engine coupled to the generator unit kicks in.

Two electric motors drive the rear wheels with peak power of 2 x 50 kW and peak torque 2 x 1,400Nm (probably 1,400 on the wheels).

We don’t see a fast charging option. Just J1772 charging inlet, so the typical taxi driver probably will not be able to drive in all-electric mode too often – maybe they will be turning it on in the city center, when emissions is most important?

With British Engineering and a purpose built London Cab design, this Electric Metrocab makes Nissan’s e-NV200 panel van with the Black Cab styling look silly. An economic comparison of these two different concepts would be interesting.

I liked the Regionalized Nissan styling much better…

1:3 is terrible

btw i think the is an extra 0 on the torque figure…
