Fisker HQ Furloughs 200 US Employees This Week

Sick of hearing bad Fisker Automotive news?  Well, relief from that may be coming soon as the automaker seems to be drifting towards its last day.

According to Autoblog, who cites an “email received from a credible source,” Fisker Automotive will today layoff its entire public relations team, as well as other employees.

The layoff, or furlough as some call it, was to occur at 11 AM EST today.

With no public relations team on hand, our contacts at Fisker cannot confirm or deny the occurrence of this event.

If you recall, it was just over a week ago when Fisker Automotive furloughed 200 US employees.  At the time,  Fisker spokesperson Roger Ormisher (a part of the public relations team) stated:

“This is a common practice, particularly in the automotive industry, to manage costs and operations based on current activity levels and commercial requirements.”

It seems near-bankrupt Fisker, which owes a payment on its $529 million DoE loan this month, is almost down for the count.

Update: Either the phones are out of service at Fisker Automotive, or it’s true that most of the automaker’s staff is gone.  Phone calls to the automaker have gone unanswered.

Update 2:  It’s reported that an additional 160 employees were released today.  Fisker is now left with a staff of 53, who will be tasked with negotiating terms of its DoE loan and to try to find a buyer or to sell the automaker’s assets.

Update 3:  Automotive News reports that at 8:30 AM EST:

“Employees were seen leaving Fisker headquarters here, some carrying boxes and many with large white envelopes. Two people who identified themselves as Fisker employees but declined to give their names verified the layoff took place.  The former Fisker employees said they were given no severance pay, other than compensation for untaken vacation days.”

Over the last several months, Fisker Automotive Inc. has been considering strategic alternatives that would allow the Company work through its current financial challenges.

Throughout this process our primary goal has been to maximize the core value of the Fisker technology and the business that we have created.

Our efforts to secure a strategic alliance or partnership are continuing in earnest, but unfortunately we have reached a point where a significant reduction in our workforce has become necessary.

Today, Fisker met with a group of employees in our Southern California office to inform them that this is their last day with the company. Yesterday, we met with a core group of employees in Southern California to express our desire that they remain with the company while we continue to address the challenges before us. We expect that at the end of the day we will have retained approximately 25 percent of our workforce.

The Company regrets having to terminate any of its hardworking and talented people. But this was a necessary strategic step in our efforts to maximize the value of Fisker’s core assets.

    That’s too bad.. I wonder if the potential buyers are just waiting for the company to liquidate so they can get a better deal on the purchase?

    So they have been carrying 200 + 160 = 360 people with nothing to do for over 10 months! I don’t think any of these people are really surprised, and I expect have already spruced up their resumes. A “skeleton crew” of 53 left, I can’t even imagine why it take that many to negotiate loans or sale of the company.

      They can go up to the Michigan based LG Chem plant and hang out with the employees waiting to start up battery manufacture there.

      Too bad to see this happen but we were calling this early last year when A123 came out with the one dollar hose clamp recall for the Karma followed by the whole battery pack recall followed by the really bad EPA ratings for the car. It had a very short life once it failed to move on the Atlantic plant startup.
