First Tesla Supercharger in Illinois Goes Live (w/video)

JUN 27 2013 BY MARK KANE 6

You remember all those videos (see sample video below) with the Mitsubishi i-MiEV in Normal, IL?

Well, Normal is now even more extraordinary, as Tesla Motors just unveiled there a station full of Superchargers for Model S and Tesla’s future models.

It is sort of located between Chicago and St. Louis or between Indianapolis and Des Moines.  Here’s the physical address, just in case you’re thinking of Supercharging up.

Normal, IL Highway 55
Exit 165Uptown Station Parking Deck
11 Uptown Circle
Normal, IL 61761

This is the first of the new wave of Superchargers that will open this summer.

Ugh.. that second video was almost disturbing. It was like something out of a nightmare. Everyone in the town driving Mitsubishi i-Mievs. This is exactly the type of thing the anti-EV crowd has been pitching for years. They say everyone wants them to give up their nice cars and drive little dinky electric cars. Well, watching this video actually gives some credibility to those arguments. It would have been nice if they could have included some other EVs in the video.

I agree, but that’s a Mitsubishi video, and that weird little egg-EV is the only one they make.

Whats around the SuperCharger though? Its nice to have one, but I don’t want to hang out in a parking garage for 20-30 minutes while the car charges!

There’s a ton of great stuff nearby. Many local restaurants and shops all close by. for more info. I was one of the Model S owners that attended the event. A group of us went to lunch close by while the last cars finished up charging. We ate at a great local restaurant called Medici. Everyone agreed that although this is a couple of miles off the interstate, this is a great location.

Reply to myself… I forgot to say, I’m the author of the ribbon cutting video that has been linked for this article.

Welcome, David.

Great video and thanks for sharing it with us. 🙂 So glad to see Normal continuing its EV agenda, and embracing other brands / technologies.
