Unpacking The Beijing Auto Show, From The Xiaomi SU7 To The Ford Bronco EREV
Both Chinese and non-Chinese car companies brought their best to what's become the world's most important auto show.
By this point, China's impact on the global car landscape is clear. On this week's Plugged-In Podcast, Kevin Williams and I discuss the latest and greatest Chinese EVs he saw and drove at the Beijing Auto Show last month.
We talk about the high-tech, high-performance stuff, like the track-ready Xiaomi SU7 Ultra he got to test out. On the complete opposite end of the spectrum is the Geely EX2, a cheap Chinese grocery-getter that's recently become the country's best-selling vehicle. Kevin explains why it makes sense that this little Geely is beating out the BYD Seagull.
Somewhere in the middle lies the Nio Firefly, compact, cutesy EV that's been around for a bit, but just debuted Nintendo Switch integration. Neat!
One big shift evident at the show that we dive into: Non-Chinese brands are starting to bring their A-game, Kevin says. Hyundai trotted out the Ioniq V, a wedge-shaped beauty made specifically for the world's biggest car market. Kevin got to check out the Ford Bronco New Energy, a rugged, China-only extended-range SUV. His verdict? Americans are missing out on this one.
