Fastned recently added a fourth “Power” plan, which offers energy from any of its 51 fast charging stations in the Netherlands at €0.19* per kWh.

It would be comparable to home charging, but there is also a fixed rate on top of €24 a month – cost of doing business we suppose.

Whether it’s favorable to take Power plan (or other) depends on the usage of the EV owner, but even if you don’t find yourself looking for a charging solution in the Netherlands, we think Fastned’s various options for public fast charging would be a good model for other networks to follow.

Our calculations shows that if you charge up to about 30 kWh a month (once or two times) you should still take Basic plan. Using around 70 kWh a month, the best option moves to the Standard plan, and then with greater usage (up to a few hundred kWhs) the Power plan is best.

The Unlimited plan is ultimately the best at nearly 400 kWh a month, with costs never exceeding €99/month.

“With the new Fastned Power price plan, everyone can charge at Fastned for the price of green electricity at home. This also makes electric driving financially attractive for those 75% of households in The Netherlands who do not have access to their own driveway. For the same price, you can charge up to 15X faster throughout the Netherlands at 51 Fastned stations.

The Fastned Plan
Owners of electric vehicles who have access to their own driveway can charge with green power for 19 cent per kWh. Electric vehicle owners without their own driveway are dependent on publicly accessible charging facilities. Fastned wants to offer all electric drivers access to fast, good value charging infrastructure. We aim to achieve this by using the economies of scale, to bring the cost of charging down as far as possible.

This is the Fastned plan:

(1) Give freedom to drivers of electric vehicles by building subsequently a national and a European network of fast charging stations;

(2) The more electric vehicles hit the road, the better fast charging stations are shared between these cars – which means a higher utilization of capacity;

(3) The faster fast charging gets – from 50 kW today to 300 kW around 2019 – the more cars can charge per station per hour;

(4) The more electricity sold, the better we we can utilize our network, the cheaper we can offer our green kilowatthours to customers.

With the introduction of the Fastned Power price plan, we bring the future forward and lower the barriers for driving an electric vehicle for everyone. This accelerates the transition towards electric mobility.

A fixed price per month
Just like other price plans, Fastned does not charge for starting a charging session, does not charge for a charge card (there is none) and there are no hidden costs. The fixed costs for the Power price plan are EUR 24 per month. Fastned uses this to pay for the fast chargers, the grid connections, the free wifi at all stations, the maintenance of locations and chargers, employees (like customer support), expansion of the network and the guarantee of reliability.

These monthly costs are not that different from a charging point at home. The costs of your own charge point, inculding installation, quickly add up to EUR 1500. Add to this the often incurred monthly subscription fees of ~ EUR 5 per month, plus maintenance and repairs if things break down. For the same price, you can have Fastned Power for more than 6 years.

I can see a business case if 75 % of homes in a given country have no driveway to charge into.

Those people simply won’t buy plug-ins as without access to cheap home charging they become relatively expensive and highly impractical.

Plan B would be battery swapping.

We tried to take a subscription for fast charging along the way to a weekend on one of the Dutch islands. A 215 km trip with our 30kwh Leaf. We activated the subscription only to find out afterwards that it would take almost a month to become active. We still payed the 0.79 EUR per KWh.

So much for 0.19 cents per kWh 😉

I too dont like subscription. After 4 years of deiving a Leaf I see that the need for fast charging is different from month to month. Most months i dont fast charge st all, I do well with only slow charging. A few times a year i do longer trips an make 6-8 fast charges of 10-25 minutes. And a few times a year i have so much small driving that I need some fast charging. But no single fast-charging operator fills my needs alone. In Norway the two largest operators together cover the roads pretty good and they both use “pay per minute” which actually works well when there is a limited amount of fast chargers. As the SOC increases the charging speed goes down, which inceases the price per kWh and makes it more economically for the driver to leave the station and head for next charger when you reach around 70%-80%.

That is ridiculous. Here on the US AeroVironment operates the chargers for the West Coast Electric Highway network. Just the other day I pulled into one of the stations and a new Leaf owner was on the phone with them. He signed up on the spot for the $20/month subscription and charged with his new plan. Until his RFID comes in he will still have to call to activate any time he charges but there is no other wait time. The non-subscription cost to charge is flat $7.50 for a quick charge or $4.00 for 240VAC. The $20/mo subscription is also a flat rate. Since I charge a minimum of 3 quick charges/month this works out great. It also has the effect of users not feeling like they are short changed if someone else comes up to charge and they leave early because they have enough energy to get to their destination.

400 kWh is about 1200 miles, average monthly mileage for a new car in the US. That’s 48 gallons at 25 mpg, costing about $100 in the US. That’s three 16 gallon fillups, taking two minutes pump time plus a few minutes pulling in, swiping your card, etc. Figure 15 minutes total.

Fastned’s price for 400 kWh is 99 euro, a bit more than $100. At 50 kW charging time is 8 hours vs. 15 minutes. At 300 kW in 2019 charging time drops dramatically to an hour and 20 minutes

Of course Fastned is not in the US, most charging is at home or work, etc. I just threw these numbers out there to give a little perspective.

It’s a bit costly but gas is more expensive in Europe so compared to European gas prices it’s pretty good. The Netherlands seems to have the highest gas prices in Europe in fact as far as I can find out, the average gasoline price is $6.32 per US gallon as of Aug 1st.

Gas before taxes is about the same in Europe or US. Taxes make the difference. The question is, how long EU governments will be able to cope with budget revenues from gas tax going down. Eventually they will need to recoup them one way or another.
0.19EUR/kWh Netherelands rate is cheap, it may be over 0.30 in Germany. And even at 0.19 it is 6.40 EUR for “gallon equivalent” of 33.7 kWh. It is good that battery cars have high mpge.

Wow Chargepoint should learn in Washington DC they charged 4 times the price per kW/h so makes way cheaper to put gas in my other car

I recently calculated the extra cost of fast charging 5% of total yearly miles traveled. It comes out to an average of $130 extra per year to fast charge. If total yearly costs to charge at home are $400-$450, then its only about 30% more per year to fast charge. Not a deal breaker for the average DCFC user. Some will be more, some less.

Also, I recently researched what the average cost is worldwide for a 20 minute charge and a 30 minute charge.

It’s $6.50 to $7.00 for a 20 minute charge and $8.50 for a 30 minute charge.
