Plug-In Electric Car Sales In Europe – July 2017

41% percent more plug-in electric vehicles were sold in Europe in July than a year ago, which continued the strong growth trend we have seen so far in 2017 with 154,733 plug-in deliveries overall – up 34%.

The Eco Tour di Sicilia and Renault ZOE

Out of the total 19,643 sales that were made in July, nearly 10% were from local bestseller – the Renault ZOE, which was #1 at 1,919 deliveries – up 68%.

In total, four models managed to exceed 1,000 sales in July, and into 5 figures (10,000+) over the first seven months of the year:

  • #6 Mercedes GLC 350 – 991 (6,917)
  • #7 VW Passat GTE -627 (6,864)
  • #8 BMW 225xe Active Tourer – 901 (6,055)

  • #10 BMW 330e662 (5,614)

The European version of Chevrolet Bolt EV – Opel Ampera-e still moves slowly given its thin supply from the US, and the YTD numbers have yet to crack the Top 30.  For some prospective on that, even the new MINI Countryman PHEV is scaling sales much faster than the Ampera-e, as in July the quirky MINI notched 452 sales (1,281 in June-July).

Another Euro point of view

What is that Merc. GLC 350 anyway ? It seems to be selling very well while I did not noticed even one in the streets yet. That old dog Mercedes isn’t even trying (31km NEDC range come on…) and still manages to do not too bad.

It is a car that is cheaper when looking at power than the petrol/diesel GLCs

So unless you want the absolutely weakest engine they offer then the plug-in is your cheapest option and gives a lot of bang for the buck.

It is almost surprising that they sell any GLCs except the plug-in version.
Add all the benefits, incentives, lesser taxes etc. + some new technology and green cred to that.

What the article don’t say is that manufacturers lose money on each sale but catch some temporary carbon credits.

not really , with recent drop in battery prices todays EV are actually more remunerative than thermic equivalent , VW makes more margin on Electric Golf than on Diesel or gasoline

Another Euro point of view

I wish that could be true, IMO we have not reached this point yet although I might be wrong. Any study I could find on the net that supports this ?
I think tipping point when a EV with a 40Kwh battery will be cheaper to build than a comparable ICE is coming very soon but is not there yet.

Do you have any source for that information?

Sergio marchionne said that he lose 10 000$ on each ev sold. It was in autobloggreen one year ago.

They should be called Maxi instead of Mini

While car registrations go up, there is also some sad news on the EV bus front:
Sunday morning, the Sileo bus factory (a newcomer in the bus making field, but already one of the largest manufacturers of all electric buses in Europe with significant orders and hundreds sold) was destroyed in a massive fire. Cause unknown (wouldn’t be surprised about foul play), nothing left (even administration building and parking lot for “shipping ready” buses is completely gone).

I can find no information on this in any google search NOR on their official site. Can you please provide proof?

What about the Bolt? I know that is going to be sold there….not yet?

It is sad to see the Model S as the only American plug-in selling well there.

They are not. The first generation sold extremely poorly, and the Europeanized version was discontinued as a result.

As mentioned in the article: the Bolt gets rebranded as “Opel Ampera-E” in Europe. But GM is practically not delivering any vehicles at all. The trickle amount that does get there either ends up exclusively in Norway, or in commercial car sharing fleets and super-restrictive lease-only, buying-forbidden publicity programs by a negligible amount of dealerships.

In some countries, like for example Germany, it is expected that normal consumers won’t be able to actually own a Bolt/Ampera-E until late 2018/early 2019.

Ford offers the Focus Electric here as a compliance car, but it’s noo expensive to move relevant numbers. Ford has not made any other electrification efforts in Europe at all.
