European Plug-In Electric Car Sales Exceeded 300,000 In 2017

Europe completed the full year of 2017 with plug-in electric car sales growth (year-over-year), although December failed to beat the 2015 rush for cars before incentives disappeared in some countries.

Some 33,738 plug-ins were sold in Europe in December (up 11%) at 3% market share.

For the full year – 306,143 plug-ins sold is a new record (up 38%) at average 2% market share. Sales divides nearly fifty/fifty between BEVs and PHEVs.

The best selling model in Eurupe for the month and for the year was:

  • #1 Renault ZOE 3,380 (31,410 YTD)

The biggest plug-in car manufacturers was

  • #1 BMW – some 55,000 and 18% share

Here is the full list of top 20 best selling plug-in cars, provided by the EV Sales Blog.

BMW i3 (20,855) and Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (19,189) completed the podium, followed by the Nissan LEAF (awaiting reinforcements of the new model at 17,454).

Tesla sold some 15,553 Model S and 12,630 Model X.

I suppose there’s an argument to put Mitsu with Nissan. Either way despite all the purist nonsense on PHEV we hear and the ‘vaporware’ VW comments (well earned historically) it would appear VW outsold Tesla in Europe and is probably going to do so again in 2018. In fact there’s a fair amount of evidence that the order will be the same again for the top 4 in 2018.

Americans have lots of trouble understanding anything that does not involve America being more important than… well everything…

Going by sales VWs market number 1 is CHINA and 2 is the EU and 3 is probable the World minus US and number 4 is probably the US itself…

Showing facts to people that label VW and others as vaporware is a waste of time as they are simply FUDSTERS who only care about Tesla…

1. The use of FUDSTER I think borders on cultural appropriation of Pu Pu.
2. Yes it has always been a bit frustrating that the US is number 4 as you mention on VWs list. They haven’t even tried real hard to make it not 4 over the years (EV or otherwise). Often we get the hand-me-downs for models a couple years late. VW is a gigantic company with only a small presence in the US.

Another Euro point of view

Indeed, reading comments from US sites/blogs those last years has been a real eye opener to me. I never expected before that coming from a small country & having a multicultural family would appear rather late in life to be such a blessing. I mean we can’t limit our vision to our borders, that would be 100 miles on one side and 100 miles on the other side. Same with languages, a restricted family gathering involves 5 different languages spoken. I naturally collect information from EV market in China or in other parts of Europe and giving it as much importance if not more importance as EV market of my own country. About VW, I was amazed at the ignorance of US posters here until one year ago that were all about VW certainly going soon bankrupt because one of their smallest regional markets (USA) experienced a temporary slump due to dieselgate. Now, practicing US sites rather intensively for the latest 5 years it seems that east coast Americans are often more knowledgeable and educated in respect of what happens in the rest of the world as compared to west coast & fly over states Americans.

I also love the spiel we have to go through every time there is an article about a new fast charging network. The top comment will always be something like “Where are the cars that support fast charging?”

And every time there is an article about a new car announcement the top comment will complain about the lack of fast chargers.

If it’s not about Tesla there is no winning.

Europeans seem to have a hard time grasping that Europe is not the center of the universe.

The elitism from Europeans never fails to surprise. Just when you think it can’t get more insufferable you read another ignorant post.

PHEV = gas car

I suggest changing your mindset from binary thinking to directional thinking.

Damn right! If every car in the US had a plug and could do just 20 miles on electricity the US could cut gasoline consumption with at least 50%.

PHEV owners regularly block chargers from real EVs.

The answer to this is more chargers, not fewer PHEVs.

80%+ of charging is done at home.

They have just as much right to charge as you have…

Having said that, I have more often than not encountered an Outlander hooked up to a fast charger, having finished charging already, but with the owner nowhere to be seen to move his vehicle to allow others to use this vital piece of infrastructure. They seem less aware that for others the use of a fast charger is not optional.

I’m not a fan of regular PHEV, but I believe full electric cars with a range extender (like the i3) will make sense for certain people during the transition period.

Every kilometer that is driven electrically should be seen as a win.
