EnerDel announced that it supplied its newest high-density Moxie+ lithium-ion modules and Secure+ Battery Management System to B3CG Interconnect for a Canadian project lead by Lion Bus to build electric school buses. B3CG is responsible for the final battery and wiring harness assembly.

Lion Bus, a Canadian school bus producer, was recently awarded by The Quebec Ministry to develop an all-electric school bus as part of the Transportation Electrification Strategy promoted by the Canadian Government.  The government aims to have more then 10,000 EVs on Quebec roads by 2017.

The bus will have 72-seats, composite body materials and will have over 100 kWh battery pack. Expected range will be ~50 miles, which should be sufficient to travel the typical school bus route.

The First prototype battery pack has already been delivered. According to the press release, there are ongoing preparations for the start of series production and first vehicle introductions to regular service are set for 2015. In Canada, over 250 electric school buses are sold every year.

David Roberts, EnerDel CEO stated:

Rather traditional looking…

Right, with a traditional radiator grill. I realize a school bus is hardly a low aero drag vehicle, but it cannot hurt to close that opening down to a minimum.

No smoky exhaust – make being behind this bus much more pleasant.

Yeah, the grill is HUGE. Why is the grill so HUGE? Just to help it fit into a stable of older looking vehicles in the bus yard? What kid wouldn’t love to ride to school in a bullet train styled bus? And the vehicle would have better range.

I wonder how many kids will miss the bus now. We used to be able to hear it coming, then run from our house to the bus stop.



VERY cool. And a single charger, like a Leviton 400 (40 amp j1772) would charge this thing back up in around 10 hours. Perfect for daily school bus duty. Especially if they plugged in while at school. Or even if just during the overnight, it should work cheaply and trouble free.

It does seem like a no brainer. Further proof that it just takes time to get the message out. I would not have a clue how to do it, but wouldn’t it be great if every county school system ordered just one. Maybe better if in every state one school made a large enough change over to see the cost savings on both fuel and the lack of maintenance.

Incidentally Mark, thanks for the help on the solar equipment. I went with a Rochester firm here (O’connell electric), a regular electric contractor, who gave me what appears to be second best pricing. I got a whale of an offer today from simply-solar, but he stated he misquoted before and it may be that he misquoted low this time and he’d change it before I signed the contract. Anyway, I’m getting an oldfashioned 38 panel 240 watt system (9120) watts, and doing the ac work myself with a line side tap to avoid silly inspector issues. I wanted to take a 50 amp feed out of a subpanel, and in no way violate the 120% bus rating in either the subpanel nor main panel, but the inspector supposedly would allow only 20 amps that way, so I did a line side service entrance tap to avoid the issue, even though it was extra work for me. No monitoring other than an old fashioned analog revenue clock pointer dial meter in a round socket, and 2 – qo 30 amp breakers for the 2 inverters. 50 amp main service disconnect, (DP QO), but#6 copper line tap to avoid inspector issues. You are welcome. People just don’t believe how cheap they can buy the equipment. I knew you would pull it off! I want to touch base with you when you are finished to update me on the NY policies.
