Report: Tesla to establish an engineering base in the UK

Tesla Motors recently hinted at a significant investment and expansion plan for Europe.

After the acquisition of engineering firm Grohmann Engineering in Germany, there are additional plans for a Gigafactory 2 (for batteries and cars), and an engineering base in UK according to Tesla CEO Elon Musk.

“We are likely to establish a Tesla engineering group in Britain at some point in the future.”

According to the Telegraph, Elon Musk appreciates the British automotive expertise, and notes how much British talent is in the Formula 1.

“We have a lot of respect for the British automotive engineering talent. Just look at Formula 1 – it amazes me how much British talent there is in that.

“We are likely to establish a Tesla engineering group in Britain at some point in the future.”

Musk is also not concerned about Brexit, as the Tesla boss stated he “did not see” the split as like to have any “signficant impact” to the company’s dealings in the region.

On the topic of a second Gigafactory topic, Tesla is seeking an “ideal location” in Europe.

“Tesla is going to make some very significant investments in Europe – and the US of course,” Mr Musk said. “There is no question of at least one, maybe two or three gigafactory locations in Europe in the future.

“Currently Europe is a market for Tesla but we think it the right thing to do is to start producing cars there as soon as we can reasonably do.”

Musk sounds a like a rock band or politician on tour:

“We love you”, “You are number one”, “Best crowd ever”

(Repeated every night in a new arena somewhere).

Musk promises new projects all over the world (Germany, Japan, China, UK…) without thinking about cap-ex or liquidity issues.

An engineering group is not going to require a lot of capex.
Salaries, a fat internet connection, some fast computers and rent for the office. All of that is oppex not capex.

A Gigafactory 2 in Europe (see article again) is cap-ex, billions of it.

at tftf, my guess is tesla will time it accordingly. Why wouldn’t they?

Oh Yea! He Da Man!

Where doesn’t Elon plan to put Tesla? Broken record.

Putting the factory in UK is not the best strategy. Uk want brexit, and other european countries are fed up with UK exigences. So long UK… so maybe tesla should be concerned by taxes regarding exportation in the near future.
There are many other places with automotive expertise….

I don’t suppose it has occurred to you that a weaker currency more than offsets trade tariffs ?

Then there is corporation tax on top of that, trade free deals with the rest of the world, less beurocracy & less union interference ?

But I guess you could be right & Elon clearly hasn’t a clue what he is doing !

I think just the opposite may be true. In that Brexit has caused a crash in real estate in Britain, things are cheaper. Maybe there are facilities that are at bargain basement prices.

Well you are entitled to think what you like, the fact remains the only place in the entire country where property prices have not gone up and in many places considerably since brexit is central London which is and always has been an entirely different property marke, London’s property market overheated up until April due to changes in Stamp Duty (house buying tax) and was already forecast before the referendum to fall again afterwards.

The economy here has done exactly the opposite to what all the so called experts had forecast including the IMF who admitted they got it wrong !

Apparently this is a “fact” only in the imaginary world where you reside, not the real world.

Yup, the British economy is strong. They buy a lot of German cars. The rest of europe is in no position to go against them as they will want to continue have good trading relations with them.

We are talking about unlaid eggs here.
The Brexit hasn’t happen yet…
Wait for the Brexit wich will take a few years and then we can argue about it.

Top two markets for tesla in Europe are Norway and UK. Makes UK a great place for gigafactory 2

After Brexit I don’t think U.K. Will be a good spot for Euro production and distribution.

I don’t think Brexit will have as bad an effect as people fear. Nissan certainly thinks so

And what you think is irrelevant because you’re not an expert on economics.

Neither are you!

Give it twelve months and lets see where we are after both Germany and France have had their elections and then their own ‘in-out’ referendums and their people have also voted to leave the EU.

Both the German and French people are sick to death of having to pay for the EU AND the seemingly never ending influx of so called refugees!
The EU is already falling apart. After France and Germany vote to leave, it will implode!

No Tesla on Mars.

Now that the Coal & 0il guy is in He may need to re-locate to China ,where they’re Going “FULL TILT” on Solar & wind to cut pollution..

It makes good sense to put RHD development/adaptation and production in the UK. Since the UK is the only country in Europe that drive on the left side Brexit shouldn’t matter much, it might even be an advantage in the end.

Yes, and the British powers that be would certainly love to have them, so Tesla could see tax breaks, incentives, etc…They know well how to play that game.

They could make RHD models for all of the UK’s ex colonies, as well as Japan

Exactly!

You may be surprised to learn that whether you drive on the correct side of the street or not has NO effect on which hand drive vehicles are produced there…

He said they will establish an engineering office in Britain, not necessarily the Gigafactory. It will more likely be in Germany.

I would put money on Germany being an EU member in four years time!

That should have read WOULDN’T, not would
