Elix Announces 10 kW Wireless Charging Solution

ELIX Wireless, a spin-out from the University of British Columbia (UBC), after introducing E1K 1kW wireless charging system earlier this year now brings on the market its 10 kW version E10K for electric vehicles.

Canadian company said in the press release that E10K is now available to customers and partners, although there is no price list nor any kit developed – we believe – for installation in popular models.

ELIX E10K works on much lower frequency than most of other solutions (120-140 Hz range), but efficiency remains above 90%.

“The E10K Wireless Charging System is based on ELIX Wireless’ patented Magneto-Dynamic Coupling (MDC) technology, which delivers to customers a safer and faster wireless charging solution ideal for harsh environmental conditions as well as hazardous operating environments.”

“MDC operates at an extremely low frequency (120-140 Hz range); around 1000 times lower than a typical induction based system. Its low electro-magnetic radiation properties make it safe to operate in hazardous environments such as oil & gas, mining, subsea, chemical processing and more. One of MDC’s key benefits is it can automatically remove any foreign objects that may come into the charging zone without human intervention.”

We are afraid that weight of 45 kg (on the vehicle side) is too high, but maybe for heavy duty vehicles it will not be problem.

The input power is 208v three phase so this is not a residential product. It’s most likely for commercial or industrial vehicles. And 99 lbs hanging off the bottom of my Leaf would be double the weight of the 2″ receiver hitch i have bolted on. This is most likely for fleet vehicles, maybe post office or ups?

230 v 3 phase is residential standard in large part of europe.

This could be good for home use in the States with a phase converter – how inexpensive and I’d have to know more details about the 3 phase usage of the device. 208 is getting more rare in Ontario than 600 volts, so must be for the American market substantially.

As far as Europe goes, I thought 220 volt 3 phase was only found in some obsolete services in Finland. Most of the rest of the world uses 380-416.

Specs are good, but I’d prefer independent testing, since the Plugless REAL specs are much more potentially problematic than their advertising copy.

I have never seen 220 volt 3 phase in Finland (and I have lived here most of my life), but I have seen it in Norway.

230 volt 3 phase is also called 400 volt, because there is 400 volts between the phases – so same thing.

230 volt 3 phase system has 230 V phase to phase voltage. No doubt some people call 400 volt 3 pahse system a 230 volt 3 phase system, but this is not correct and should not be confused with real 230 volt 3 phase system.

The standard voltage in Canada, thus in Ontario is 120/240 volt single phase and three phase is abundantly supply as 120/208 volts or 347/600 volts,

In short 120/208 three phases is pretty common, in fact almost anywhere you have three phases you have it.

OK, well I admit I was splitting hairs here. I was talking about the main service to a building which substantially seems to be 347Y/600, and then the internal distribution to convenience outlets, etc would be typically 120Y/208 off of a separately derived 600 – 208 transformer. So if you want to say that therefore 208 is common, so be it.

How does it “remove any foreign objects that may come into the charging zone without human intervention”? I don’t get it.
