These two graphics, put out by Wirtschafts Woche and McKinsey & Co., show plug-in electric vehicle demand and supply for several countries around the globe.

For example, the graphic above depicts Norway as leading the world in electric vehicle demand, with Spain shown as having the least demand.

The graphic below show Germany leading in global plug-in electric vehicle supply, with Denmark, Portugal, Ireland and Norway at the bottom of the supply chain.

Lastly are these two graphics below, both of which evaluate the overall plug-in electric vehicle market for various countries around the globe.  The closer to the green a country is, the hotter that particular country is in the overall electric vehicle segment.  This look shows the U.S. leading the world, with Germany and Japan slightly behind.  At the bottom (or nearest to the red color) is Ireland and Spain.

It would be helpful to note the first graphic represents per-capita demand.

And I don’t understand the second graphic at all. In what category does Germany qualify for #1 EV maker? If the metric is “more advanced” technology in a mass produced EV, then clearly an American company, Tesla Motors, is far in advance of any other.

Looks to me whoever made that graphic went out of their way to chose a measuring stick which would put Germany at #1, regardless of how meaningful it is. What was the measuring stick? “Advanced” prototype EVs? (Perhaps they’re looking at the VW XL-1, an example of extreme, cost-is-no-object engineering in a prototype which was put into -extremely- limited production for publicity purposes.)

It’s about car manufacturing. Capacity, factories, production. So in other words they are saying that VW, BMW and Mercedes are further and wider than Nissan and Mitsubishi.

Which I agree with. Germany is the leading force in EV production right now.

Meh. Germany is JUST NOW putting out some EVs. The i3, i8, Mercedes B-Class, E-Up, and eGolf all just came out in the last 6 months. They have been dragging their feet for a long time.

And I hope we see their consumers buy them. Since they’ve gotten so good at installing wind & solar relatively cheaply, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Germans turn onto driving EVs because they can do it without paying for expensive gasoline.

Mercedes B Class has a Tesla powertrain.

Tesla, Chevy Volt & Spark, plus Ford electrics are farther along than the Germans.

“…further and wider….” What does that possibly mean? Further: Where is Germany “further” along in EV production than Nissan, Tesla, even Ford?

Well, I would say they choose the number of Plug-In models offered per carcompany from these nations. Can’t be absolute sales.

good luck in figuring this thing out based on the information provided in this article! with Germany being a relative “johnny come lately” to the EV game, there is no way that i am going to believe that German manufacture of EVs exceeds US capacity. on the other hand, if the measure is based on the amount of hyperbole, then Germany wins hands down!

one thing that i do interpret from the demand side vs supply side chart (a very “BCG” looking chart, i might add, which i suppose is to be expected from management consultants) is that Germany is producing for export while the US and Japan are more focused on domestic production with smaller portions of production for export.

Ireland hasn’t been getting a lot of good rap lately in the Plug-In world. I hope this is based off the sales per country made in 2013.

A German company did this very flawed “study”. Why am I not at all surprised?

Here’s the reality: Major German car manufacturers have dragged their heels in jumping on the EV bandwagon more than any others. VolksWagon, who I think outsells any other German car maker, is especially notorious for claiming the future did not lie with EVs, until only a few months ago.

Congratulations to BMW with their successful i3 EV. But it’s a Johnny-come-lately attempt to compete with the Tesla Model S, and it will remain firmly behind Tesla in worldwide luxury sedan EV sales. There isn’t any other category in which German EVs are even -close- to competing with EV market leaders.

Not even close? Come on, at least the i3 ist the most efficient EV so far and Germans always rule in the category “quality of the interior”. Besides that, I tend to agree. Mass market compatibility, range and high sales numbers are nothing german EVs are famous for.

It’s like the loud German guys showing up late and drunk to the party. They are loud, noisy, obnoxious, and arrogant. Hard to ignore. Wunderbar!

Exactly. Every, single conclusion in this study is put into question because this German consulting company places Germany at the top of EV production, when there is NOTHING to suggest that this proclamation is correct. This study is a joke.

Last time I checked, German manufacturers offered 16 Plug-In models all together. But yes, high numbers at the offered-side aren’t as impressive as high sales numbers.
