Electric Honda 160: The Stumpf 160e


We’re pretty much of the opinion that designers get to have all the fun.

This time our buddy, James Stumpf, sent over the latest from his drawing board (can we still call it that?) paying tribute to the legendary Honda 160 in a not-so-subtle way.  If it’s not readily apparent from the rendering above, let’s look at this view:

Oh, the irony.  An entire electric bike built with a body style based on a gas tank?  Oh, mercy.  Visual puns aside, here are some more views:

Now then, why do we feel like they get all the fun?  Because, well, they can imagine and “develop” whatever they think might be cool, right?  Like Dual MagDrive Wheels.

So how based in reality is this little trinket?  The “magdrive” wheels make it so we don’t need conventional suspension, judging from the fact that there’s, well, no conventional suspension, and figuring there are two of them, even just by hub motor standards, they are going to be adequate for a top speed of just over 100mph.  Can he fit 16kWh of energy into that, er, “tank”?  Sure thing, that seems reasonable.  A 160 mile range?  Sure, that’s reasonable too, with a 16kWh pack.  As for the “Electronic Twist Throttle”, we already have those, but the “Electronic Twist Brake”?  That’s something we’d have to see.

The 160e is actually pretty based in reality, after all.  Except those wheels, which seem to defy Newton’s Laws, something we never really like to do.  Could this be built with conventional hub motors?  Sure, no problem, but then you’ve got to add all that tacky suspension and steering stuff.

Perfect. Build it.

I don’t get how the front will handle. In my mind, the pivot would be too far off rotational center to work well. The entire linkage to the front wheel would have to swing. And since the “magdrive” is too far off to the side of the wheel, it will not likely steer / ride like a normal bike.

Cool. I had a 305 super hawk in 67. My buddy had the 160. We put shorty bars on them.

Yes designer have a lot of fun.
But the engineer who would do those wheel gone get some more.

No suspension?

Exactly. All listed features but the wheels are entirely feasible, even downright typical. The wheels are entirely not feasible.

Wheel/drive systems like that actually exist. There was one built for one of the discovery channel “biker build off” episodes. Pretty cool looking, but only for the rear wheel.

rule one:
“avoid the puddle!”

i think the rim bearings idea is impractical on the street….mud, dirt, sand, would all play havoc with that system…Sealed center axle bearings are much less susceptible to those routinely encountered elements of life in the real world. Rim bearings are great for a techy show vehicle….but I bet they wouldn’t last a week on the street!! One good rain…or what about the reality of dirty snow and road cinders? Salt crystals? etc. But the idea of a 160E is otherwise excellent!! Love to see a Honda 450 Scrambler replacement….OMG I really adored my Honda 450…wish I never traded it in….But I really was enthralled with my Yamaha 1100E Super Bike. Wish I could afford a Lightening!! (not a cost issue, just one of many wish items…like being able to afford them all….and a warehouse to park ’em!!)
