SsangYong hints that its first all-electric car is to be a proper 4×4 for off-road driving.

SsangYong e-SIV EV concept

The South Korean company unveiled a concept model e-SIV EV in Geneva and now it’s expected that in 2020 it will introduce electric versions of the next-generation Korando (on top of the conventional version).

The e-SIV EV concept was equipped with a 61.5 kWh battery and a 140 kW electric motor, which is not that much for a true off-road vehicle, but there are still more than two years to figure out how to put inside more kWhs.

“SsangYong UK boss, Nick Laird told Autocar that the EV will be “a huge step forward, even over the current model”. He said: “it sticks to the company’s roots and DNA of trying to be a proper SUV and crossover brand”.

A little surprising is that Laird is also interested in diesel-electric hybrid powertrains instead of a petrol-electric hybrid

“I do hope that the diesel market recovers; I think it deserves to.”

SsangYong e-SIV EV concept specs:

  • 140 kW electric motor
  • 61.5 kWh battery
  • 320-450 km (200-280 miles) of cruising range
  • 150 km/h (94 mph) top speed
  • 0-80% charging in 50 minutes

If he can get diesel to stay within allowable emission levels without urea then they might be feasible. I’m going to guess he can’t, though.

They say it is a 4X4 yet only has one 140kW motor, surly it would need two motors?

Why? All traditional 4×4 are with just one engine.

A real 4×4 should of course have (at least) one motor for each wheel though.

Land Rover Defender have one engine and less than 100 kW.

It has 2/3 of the battery of the Jaguar I-Pace and about the same cruising range?
Any explanation?

Hard to tell much from concept specs…. I-Pace is WLTP certified at 298, or 480 km, and NEDC at 336… EPA coming soon… Rumor is its going to blow away the 240 estimate…

I am not sure what to think or this one…
