According to Norwegian site VG.no, the recent introduction of the AWD Tesla Model S has led to a dumping of relatively new RWD Teslas:

“The launch of the new four-wheel drive Tesla Model S has made the provision of the now one year old Tesla with only rear wheel drive has increased sharply. Investment Director at Nordea believe in a sharp fall in prices.”

This course of action was expected.  Norwegian winters can be brutal and some residents of Norway consider AWD to be a must.  It’s no surprise to us that RWD Tesla owners are moving up to the dual-motor Model S.

The problem is that as the Norwegian market becomes flooded with RWD Tesla, used car prices for those models will fall sharply.

Per VG.no:

“Used prices for electric car launched as new in Norway last year, is on from 550.000 and upwards towards NOK 800,000 depending on variant, mileage and accessories.”

When VG.no reached out to Tesla for pricing of new Model S EVs, this is the response it received (*note: these figures include incentives availble for new electric cars):

So, it would seem that the used RWD cars are still holding value well for now, but as more and more AWD Model S EVs reach Norway, we expect pricing for the still-relatively-new RWD Model S sedans to drop sharply.

Is it me or are these used prices higher than Tesla’s new quotes:

hmm, I saw the same thing. Is there a Google Translate error here. Used car starting prices at lower than a new S85D doesn’t seem to make sense.

Used inventory in the US went from ~40 to ~200 since the D upgrade came out. Used prices have dropped a little also. To be expected.

Norway is subsidizing their EVs by something crazy like 50% of the purchase price. So it is plausible to sell a Tesla for more than the original net cost if you export it outside the country (don’t know how easy or hard that is).

Not really a subsidy for EVs. Norway has huge taxes (100% or more) for oil burning cars. EVs are not taxed.

Nope, the issue is simply that the demand side has been much larger than the supply, so used Tesla has even been sold above the prices on new vehicles.

With the intro of D models, the RWD models falls down to a more ‘normal’ price level (but still keeps the prices well compared to ICE’s)

That is wrong.

774,200 NOK is just that. That’s seven hundred seventy-four thousand and two hundred. It would be incorrect to add “million” or even “thousand”.

There is a rush-on to get the Ds into Norway now before the government-limit of 50,000 EVs sold will occur this summer. This may have led to Model X reservation holders in Norway to pull back and buy a Model S85D or P85D. Once the 50,000 is hit, there is hope that they will extend the benefit, but isn’t there a bit of backlash in this area from the regular citizens in terms of the amount of benefit an EV gets over non-EV?

No there is not.

Regular Norwegian citizens are very pro EV and pro Environmentalism.

What there is a backlash against is EVs using Bus lanes as there are so many EVs they are disrupting the bus schedules. At least in Oslo. People using electric Buses is more efficient than people using private electric cars.

That is what is likely going away. Not tax advantages for EVs nor the punitive taxes on gas guzzlers.

Norway is more pro-money than pro-environment. If Norway were really “pro Environmentalism,” they wouldn’t be extracting and selling all that CO2-producing crude oil to the rest of the world. They would leave that crude oil in the ground and figure out other ways to create wealth. Does Norway really think that the CO2 that is created when their oil is burned somehow won’t affect Norway’s environment? France, on the other hand, is generating an abundance of CO2-free nuclear powered electricity and selling it to neighboring countries.

If Saudi Arabia created a generous incentive plan to promote sales of EVs to its citizens but continued to extract and sell crude oil to the rest of the world, would Saudi Arabia then be very pro-environment like Norway?

Even without any tax advantages when buying an EV, there is still a huge advantage on fuel prices. Norway has very high taxes on petrol fuel, while electricity is very cheap.

I keep checking the Norwegian website for selling used cars (finn.no) hoping I’ll be able to buy a used Model S, but prices are still almost as new. Perhaps it’s the low mileage and all the cars are specced-out. But it still sucks that I can afford a 2 year old 7-series but not a 1.5 year old Model S. What’s wrong with the World today?

What’s the Model S ranked at in sales in Norway? 2nd? 3rd?

Somehow, I highly doubt that prices are going to drop that much. And if they did, it’s easy to ease the excess supply by moving them to Denmark, Germany, and Sweden where I’m sure they’d sell for next to full price.

But way to go in the overoptimism department.

Last year it was second in sales of EV’s. This year it’s 9th so far among EV’s but it will soon get higher up the table when the first batch of D’s get to Norway.

I expect 500 Ds in Norway this quarter.

500 D’s would be far less than last Q1 2014 of selling regular Model S. I think it may be more like 800-900, but January was only 71 due to the switch of orders during Q4 for those who ended up converting from S/P85 to S85D and P85D.

Export from Norway in EU will be expansive, because there are taxes to pay. Norway is not a member of the EU-Economy-sphere.

Yes, we are members of the EU economical sphere – but not the political sphere.

Which mean no import taxes.

Norway is in “EFTA”, which is just linked to EU. So taxes/customs duties are definitely applied.
Another example: I can buy a lot of booze in Denmark and drive over the border to Germany without problems (there won’t even be a customs check). Not so if I drive from Denmark to Norway.
