Daimler and BMW announced an agreement on joint developments and implementation of wireless charging for plug-in vehicles.

For now, the German companies are testing 3.6 kW units with efficiency greater than 90%, but 7 kW version is on their minds as well.

“The system consists of two components: a secondary coil integrated into the under tray of the car and a primary coil integrated into a floor plate that can be placed on a garage floor for instance. Electrical energy is transmitted contact-free without the need for a cable, at a power rate of 3.6 kW and with a degree of efficiency of 90%.”

Mercedes-Benz declared that it will test such a system in a test fleet of new plug-in hybrid cars, the S 500 Plug in HYBRID, which are scheduled for launch on the market this September.

“Wireless charging of the battery will make the handling of electric drive and plug-in hybrid vehicles even easier. Mercedes-Benz will commence fleet testing of this “unplugged” technology with the S 500 Plug in HYBRID soon, in order to develop a real S-Class solution in recharging the high voltage battery in terms of comfort and ease of operating in the near future.”

S 500 Plug in HYBRID offers 325 kW of power and 650 Nm of torque, so it will be one of the most powerful plug-in cars available, with 33 km or 20.5 miles of all-electric range and a 5.2 second time for 0-62 mph. Wireless charging would be a welcome addition for luxury plug-in vehicles in the future.

BMW, on its side, will test wireless charging in their long-time test mules – the ActiveE (at least that’s what we see in the BMW supplied images) with a goal of commercialization of this solution in BMW i cars.

“Driving pleasure and sustainability are fused together in unprecedented fashion in the all-electric BMW i3 and the BMW i8 plug-in hybrid sports car. Their high-voltage batteries can be recharged quickly and easily by means of the BMW i Wallbox that forms part of the 360° ELECTRIC portfolio. This sophisticated charging station with fast-charge facility for feeding cars with power either at home or at work underlines the all-embracing approach adopted by the BMW i brand when it comes to developing products and services for sustainable mobility of premium calibre. In the process, the BMW Group has assumed a pioneering role in this field and is therefore pressing keenly ahead with the development of innovative technologies for making driving with zero tailpipe emissions more and more attractive. Systems for inductive charging of high-voltage batteries are the next step forward for energy supply. The development objective in the medium term is to put reliable, non-wearing and user-friendly solutions for inductive charging into production that have been tailored to both the batteries in the BMW i cars and the high-voltage batteries in future plug-in hybrid models from the BMW Group.”

BMW hinted at some additional features, like the option to activate and monitor the charging process from a smartphones, but maybe this is an obvious inclusion these days.

“As with today’s BMW i Wallbox, the inductive power supply systems of the future will also make it possible to activate and monitor the charging process from a smartphone. The relevant smartphone app will let drivers call up the data transmitted online on the battery’s charge status, for instance, or the time remaining until charging is complete.”

    ‘Bout time somebody else wakes up and uses available technology to get rid of them plugs.
    I’ve had Plugless for over 2 months and my old L2 EVSE is gathering spiderwebs since…
    It’s like having a virtual valet that takes care of your charging needs… without the tips!;)
    …well, actually, there is a tip, it’s a 10% loss in efficiency and worth every cent extra, litteraly!

    Maybe this is why the industry isn’t jumping on Tesla’s supercharger patents (or, at least we are told that they are not, I don’t really know) – they are trying to get wireless charging going. Which, given the tiny battery packs they make for their plug-in offerings, these designs are reasonable. A Tesla needs a real charger.

    Tom, even Tesla drivers dont all drive 1000 miles per day, most of them commute like the rest of us. No real needs for ubber fast charging at home.
    Even if you have a 6 door refrigerator does not mean you will eat more, right?
    3.3 or 6.6 is plenty for overnight charging.

    wave of the future, encrypted VIN ID pass, plant ’em everywhere, pay on a VISA type direct bill – 25% of spaces at your local fill-in-the-blank (wally-world, et al) and you pay for parking, happy to do it, they make money, you get convenience (and with luck, spend More money at their establishment).
    Wish Elon & co weren’t so against it due to the 10% + loss, as it would make it EZ (therefore easier for ma and the technophobes to accept) to have your car topped off alluh-time, everywhere you shopped that had ‘plate parking’.
