CTEK Licenses WiTricity’s Wireless Charging Technology

WiTricity announced a technology and patent license agreement with CTEK Corporation, a global supplier of battery charging systems for lead-acid batteries (CTEK has sold more than 6.2 million battery chargers in 70 countries around the world).

According to the press release, CTEK would like to introduce new wireless charging products in the automotive industry, although we are not sure whether theses will be for electric cars too.

“This licensing agreement enables CTEK to commercialize WiTricity’s patented technology to create high performance, efficient wireless charging systems for a wide range of battery charging and battery conditioning applications in the transportation and industrial markets.”

“The adoption of WiTricity’s technology to deliver electric power safely over distance will allow CTEK to revolutionize the act of battery charging by removing the need for cables. Under the terms of this licensing agreement, CTEK will create wireless charging solutions based on WiTricity technology for a wide range of automotive, industrial, and recreational vehicle battery systems. By providing a flexible and efficient method of wireless power transfer over distance, WiTricity technology will enable CTEK to develop a line of products that brings a new level of convenience and ease to battery charging.”

CTEK CEO, Jon Lind stated:

I would totally pay for a wireless EV charger that you don’t have to park over in a garage. Also, I suspect it would go a long way (depending on range and safety) to solving ICEing, curbe-side charging, etc.

I hope they give it a serious go.
