Mitsubishi MiEV Evolution III

On the GTChannel, we just found complete video from the record-breaking Mitsubishi MiEV Evolution III run at Pikes Peak Challenge, in which Greg Tracy took second place overall.

Time of 9:08.188 is not only record for EVs, but also one of the fastest ever on the 20 km climbing course up to the 4,301 meters.

“Record Breaking Mitsubishi Electric Vehicle Run at Pikes Peak by Greg Tracy. Tracy climbs Pikes Peak in the Mitsubishi I-MiEV Evolution III and shatters Monster Tajima’s 2013 Electric Modified Class record by 38 seconds with a 09.08.188 record time. Tracy came in 2nd overall beating out everyone in the entire competition except for overall winner Romain Dumas in his 2013 Norm racer. This EV is fast! More video with exterior shots and interviews coming soon to GTChannel.”

Not a racing fan but I know when people see EVs beating ICE cars it makes them think. Thats a good thing.

Yeah, they’ll be thinking, “Is THAT the sound we have to look forward to?”
Whether it is the inevitable future or not, it will be a sad day indeed when the whine of an electric motor has finally replaced forever the scream of a short stroke engine and the low down grumble of a big V8…

Amazing! Can’t wait to see an EV win overall, I don’t think it will be many more years.

When they paved the entire track it kind of lessened the specialness of the event a little bit for me. It’s always been not only the challenge of elevation change, but also that pavement/dirt transition and the dangers, skills and equipment involved to conquer those challenges.

BEVs have inherent qualities that make them especially effective to this sort of challenge, especially the instant torque and quick acceleration. I believe gas burners have the edge in sheer power. The beasts charging up that hill using petroleum products have a 50 year headstart on the EV
racer. It’s fantastic they’ve gotten this far this fast!

Yes, a lot of the skill in keeping it going forwards despite being sideways has gone.
One of my favourite racing clips of all time is Cloud Dance!

    Wow! That start is insane….

I was wondering what kinds of speeds he was hitting and couldn’t tell from the video, but some basic math shows he was averaging over 120 km/h (around 80 mph) over the entire course!

Sit closer to the screen and watch it again. You can read the digital speedo on the dash.
