We aren’t sure if ClipperCreek specifically redesigned its entry level, LCS-20 level 2 charging unit for the Chevrolet Volt, but it sure seems like it.

The unit itself features a couple upgrades which could help alleviate a couple of potential concerns from choosing ClipperCreek’s most inexpensive L2 EVSE (from $379).

For starters (and good news for next generation Volt owners), the Clipper unit has more power than the outgoing model.

Specifically, 16 Amp charging, which is good for 3.8 kW – which is just higher than the new Volt’s slightly increased capacity to recharge at 3.6 kW.

Secondly (and if you are in a situation like we are, you will appreciate this), if you are too cheap to buy that second (or third) charging station for your other EV, and you often find yourself having to part at ‘just the right angle‘ so that you have enough cable to plug in that extra vehicle, the LCS-20 now comes with 25 feet of cable.  HuZZah!

In addition to the upgraded LCS-20, ClipperCreek also introduced a new accessory today…and as we have already uploaded the pictures, quotes and whatnot on the EVSE itself, we might as well mention the new gizmo as well.

And sure, a cable holder is just a little thing, and perhaps you have already built your own make-shift system to solve this problem, or you currently wrap the EVSE cord around your wall-mounted unit, but if not, this gadget certainly beats throwing the cable on the ground.

As expected, one of the fellows from ClipperCreek has something nice to say about their new product:

And with the 30% tax credit, this becomes really inexpensive. Of course to future proof your home, I would recommend the HCS-40 with a 7.7kW capability for $565. I just bought the Chargepoint Home charger which is really slick at around $650. One nice feature is that the app loads in the local utility rates and calculates charge costs, plus the app will alert you if you didn’t plug it in for the night. Best of all for the Mercedes B 250e, you can set charge start times through the iPhone or Android app.


I have the current version and I love it. Three years and absolutely rock solid. Smaller than most others. Inexpensive. I’m not sure why you would need a cable holder since it is made to wrap the cable around the body, which works great, but maybe it doesn’t work as well with a longer 25 foot cable.


A bump from 15 to 16 amps and 20 to 25 feet is welcome, if minor. Seems a little bit overblown.


You can never go wrong with Clipper Creek.

Why don’t they offer a version with a NEMA 6-20 plug? If you had a NEMA 14-30 plug, then you should buy a LCS-25P, not a LCS-20P. They should also offer a unit that is properly set for 30A circuits. Their product line currently has a hole between 25A and 40A breaker sizes.

Well, a nice commercial for CC. I think the somewhat longer cord is the ‘big’ improvement here.

Where did you guys get the idea that the new volt can take any more than 15 amps like the old volts? May be but I’ve seen nothing definitive.

If Tesla can have 10 kw @ 40 amps then the new volt can have 3.6 kw@15.

Everyone else is lowering their prices, and I was under the impression thier track record was flawless but a few posters have said they have had trouble with the car end connector.

So a price decrease was in order, especially with Home Depot selling an in/out-door unit for under $400 @ 30 amps.


GM has announced the gen 2 Volt (2016 and later) has a 16 Amp on-board charger.

Please DOCUMENT that. I have seen nothing to corroborate that. That is why documentation is necessary… They certainly said nothing here.

How expensive do you think would be to add a few 7-segment LED indicators for the voltage, current, power, energy, hell maybe even a timer? A kill-a-watt can be had for what, $30? Don’t you think that some visibility in the operation of the EVSE will greatly increase its value, and increase the customers’ happiness as they will be trusted with such “high-tech” and “confidential” data?

None of Clipper Creek’s models (or really anyone else’s) have that.


Personally, I just want it to charge when I plug my car, everything else is just unnecessary added cost.


I wouldn’t use a gas pump without a meter on it either. My EVSE helps me keep track of the cost of fuel. My monthly energy bill I receive doesn’t really help since it’s everything combined.


Basic metering stats should at least be an option, if not included by default these days.
There are cheap Chinese meters on eBay for like $10 shipped to the customer.
Surely they could make a certified model made for cheap (or just have that model certified if it’s good enough to meet the standards)

You don’t have to worry about what these “wallbox” manufacturers do or do not do. sells used revenue utility meters for $16.50. Cheap. 120, 240 or both at the same time, just like your home. Socket is 10.50.

This is enough for ONE 80 amp Tesla HPWC. If you have 2 – 80 amp TESLA HPWC and possibly a few ‘travel cord chargers’ then you’ll have to pay $50 for a 200 ampere socket. The $16.50 meter is already good for 200 amperes.


I’m more interested in them selling their own branded version of the 2016 portable voltec unit, assuming it’s not an exclusive design for GM.

Super compact, portable, and 120/240V all in one unit.
Only downside is 12A limit.


This would be a great idea.

It also would be great to offer a dual voltage (120-240 V) version of this LCS-20 model, with plugs for NEMA 5-15, 5-20, and 6-20 outlets.

The cable holder looks like a nice piece of plastic. Of course, it is branded as CC, and will help to advertise for them, so I would think they would want to offer that as a near free incentive option. I mean, what’s is the production cost of a piece of injection molded plastic now? A buck? $19 seems a little steep.
