City CarShare and Toyota Announce Dash: A Scion iQ EV Carsharing Fleet in California (w/video)

City CarShare, a Bay Area nonprofit, that provides “convenient, affordable access to shared cars in order to reduce individual car ownership and usage,” together with Toyota, announced a new carsharing fleet called Dash at the Bay Area Suburban Business Center.

Dash will be a battery-powered carsharing program at Hacienda in Pleasanton, for a pilot period of three years.

The unique thing is that Dash will include a fleet of 30 Scion iQ EV electric cars, normally not available to the public.

According to the press release, there are only 100 of these models in the world, so we suggest you use them with care.

Scion iQ EV is equipped with a small 12-kWh battery pack, so its real-world range is below 40 miles according to EPA (38 to be accurate).

The carsharing vehicles will be located at various electric vehicle charging stations throughout and near Hacienda.

“City CarShare’s Dash will provide battery-powered transportation options to the nearly 20 percent of the Park’s employees that use alternative transportation methods to get to work. The cars will allow employees to attend local meetings and run errands. Dash’s launch at Hacienda will also encourage single-car commuters to use public transit and / or join a carpool / vanpool and become carsharing members. Employees who join City CarShare will be able to use the electric vehicles by the hour for a low cost.”

Rick Hutchinson, CEO of City CarShare stated:

“City CarShare is pleased to introduce Pleasanton’s first electric carsharing vehicles at Hacienda, through our Dash fleet. By providing a carsharing option for commuters, we are working towards our goal to take 20,000 cars off of Bay Area roads by 2020, while promoting and encouraging transit, walking, carpooling and cycling.”

Craig Scott, advanced technology vehicle manager for Toyota Motor Sales USA, added:

“Toyota is exploring new business models like the City Car Share Dash fleet to meet the future mobility needs of our customers. The Scion iQ EV fleet will help us understand how electric vehicles are used in an active car sharing program and the viability of this type of program for future technologies.”

40 miles of AER on a good day.. yikes! Talk about range anxiety.

I think this vehicle will be Toyota’s cheap go-to compliance car if they pull the plug on the RAV4 program and the fuel cell pipe dream doesn’t work out for them.

As to Toyota humor: like the other readers, I too wonder what is the next joke on the EV subject that the world’s leading car maker is planning for us?

I would normally be excited about the roll-out of a new EV car sharing program. But with a 38 mile EPA range (the uninitiated and those in a hurry get less) this is a classic exme of “planning to fail”.

One use case I can see for these Lilliputian city cars is as courtesy cars at General Aviation airports where pilots fly in solo or with co-pilot and just need a way to get “the last mile” to a meeting, hotel room, etc. (pilots rarely need to go far from the airport. If they did, they would just fly into a closer airport, usually within 10 mi or less).

Another use case might be at a resort hotel, where you rarely need to go further than the gates, or the nearby town. If they were free, or nearly so.

This half-hearted attempt at an EV reminds me of what Zig Ziglar called “the losers limp”. To cover for a failed play, the player limps off the field.

The tragedy is, the Scion iQ could be a success story for Toyota, like the early Civic or CRX was for Honda.

Fiat was clever, the 500e revs the brand and brings people into the dealership that would never be there otherwise (myself included). When they figure out how to get good pricing on batteries, and mass-produce electrics, they’ll have a credible reputation for EVs.

Toyota will have cemented their reputation as delivering too little, too late.

Good thing they invested in Tesla. Alms or indulgence?
