Chevy Volt Owners Whiz Past 200,000,000 Gas Free Miles

It’s been in the making for some time, but now it’s official: Chevy Volt owners have cumulatively covered more than 200,000,000 miles on electricity alone.

Actually, the figure is indeed higher, but based on the info from participating Volt owners (via the Volt’s OnStar data system), General Motors says the total electric miles driven has eclipsed that 200,000,000-mile mark.

Let’s see, GM further says that those Volt owners have saved over 10.5 million gallons of gas by driving all those electric miles.  That’s a saving of well over $40 million, which GM oddly says is enough to buy 80 acres of a private island, where we assume there’d be no roads, hence no need for the Volt.

Moving on, GM adds that Volt drivers have cumulatively tacked up some 321-plus million miles.  That figure, once again, doesn’t include all of the 38,600-plus Volts on the road, but rather only those that submit data via OnStar.

Therefore, all of the results told here are lower than the actual figure.  Regardless, the numbers presented by GM are still impressive.

Hmmm, they are using @19 mpg in their calculations. Doesn’t seem right that a car the size of the Volt would only get 19 mpg, eh? Doesn’t it get like 36 mpg in CS mode?

At 36 mpg, it drops to 5.5 million gallons, or almost half of what the headline proclaims.

GM, Ford, you’d have a lot more credibility if you’d quit inflating numbers to such ridiculous levels..

You make a good point … any clear distortion of great numbers will not make them super-great, it will just destroy their credibility.

That being said, one could argue that a Volt’s electric miles (probably mostly city miles?) should be compared to the city mileage of (sister car) Chevy Cruise … usually rated about 25 MPG in city. Still distorted, but closer.

Personally, I don’t think GM is trying to be deliberately deceptive customers. I just think their Volt marketing group is run by imbeciles. 🙁

Glad to see an article on this. I’ve been pointing on some forums in recently as it relates to the story of reliability of the Volt with it’s two sources of power. Some questioned the complexity and reliability of the “complicated” Volt powertrain over a pure electric (BEV) or pur gas (ICE).

Do whatever you want to calculate gallons but the EV miles and the total miles are real and impressive.

I personally hit 20k EV miles this week on my Volt. I contributed .01% to the total!

  4. kdawg says:

As of yesterday (6/7), the data is

    201,202,633 EV miles
    322,958,634 Total miles

Also of interest, Volt drivers are averaging about 1million miles a day now.

My Volt is at 4K Km at 6 Months, 0.6L/100 lifetime we have long weekend, Price of petrol has gone up – Oh I’m still on my original fill of petrol …. so sad ! 🙂

  6. Bonaire says:

Tomorrow I will do my part to add to the numbers. 140 miles, with 90 of them being electric.
