Leo Carrillo State Beach and Malibu Creek State Park in Southern California now have free public charging stations courtesy of Chevrolet’s EcoAd advertising with CBS EcoMedia Inc.

The pair of chargers (one installed at each location) can accommodate up to 4 plug-in vehicles at a time.  The units were installed under the Adopt a Charger program, with Chevrolet providing the free charging and responsible for service and maintenance of the units.

Dave Barthmuss, Chevrolet’s Western Region Group Manager, stated:

“Electric vehicles are catching on and we’re proud that the Chevy Volt is the number one selling plug-in vehicle in the country. These new chargers will allow EV drivers to enjoy trips out to Southern California beaches without range anxiety. Installing EV charging stations at destination locations like Malibu Creek State Beach, where vehicles will sit for several hours, is a perfect example of the kind of infrastructure that will help grow the EV market.”

The install of these two chargers is part of California’s statewide “Cool Parks” initiative, which seeks to address climate change and to “educate park visitors, and motivate the broader public to be part of the solution.”

General Motors used the ribbon-cutting ceremony to show off its Chevy Volt and Spark EV.  Both vehicles were on hand so that attendees to test them out.

OK, so let me get this straight:
– The Volt’s better than the Leaf because it has unlimited range. Volt drivers don’t need public chargers.
– Spark EV has a DC fast charge capability. But these chargers are Level 2, so if you’re going there in a Spark EV, it’s not going to be a short visit.

I see the logic.

Seriously, the Spark is hampered by the 3.3kW charger (to save costs, GM used the Volt charger).

Yeah, and that was the reason I didn’t get one. Instead I waited for my Honda FIT EV. I REALLY wished it had a DC charger.

Someone going to a park in a Spark is likely less than 40 miles away. Thus they could even go to the park and back in the Spark. But if they are at the park with their spark to watch a lark they can get 10 miles / hour charging.

While the charging may be free, both of these parks have what appears to be a $12 parking fee.
