The Chargers At Geneva – Video


Dan Neil, of Wall Street Journal, did a “beauty pageant” for home chargers at the Geneva Motor Show.

The Tesla Supercharger is probably the most recognizable overall, and look similar to a traditional gas pump.

Volkswagen’s charger looks like a Smartphone. The one showcased in the video is the “public” version. The home charger is similar, just smaller.

The LEAF charger, although not the “prettiest” of the lot, has an additional function. It supports Vehicle to Grid technology (VTG). This can reduce an owner’s electric bill and also, in emergencies, could act as a power generator to a home for two days.

Dan’s favorite is the Volvo charger. This unit relies mostly on the user’s phone for communication.

I don’t recognize the Volvo that is plugged into the charger. I knew they had the SUV plugin.. what model was that? It looked like a sedan.

The Volvo T90 twin engine is a pretty trick machine if you are a gas head. It’s power train is very similer to the Porsche 918 except it one ups the 918 in the engine department.

The engine is a 4 banger that is both turbo charged AND super charged. Combined power of gas + electric is 400 HP (approx 300 hp out of the 4 banger).

He should have shown the Tesla charging cable that plugs into any outlet. Having the charger in the car is better fashion than any box taking up space in your garage.

Where’s the GM? (play on “where’s the beef?”) Seriously, they are just insane to not offer competitive charging solution for Bolt (ie, 150kW charger).

Originally BMW wasn’t planning on deploying charging and they changed their mind. Hopefully GM does the same.

GM has never shown infrastructure support for their electrified products.

They believe it’s someone Else’s responsibility.

They said as much (ie, no support unless it benefits all their cars, including gas cars). But we’re not talking about giving it away for free. They can build something that’ll charge Bolt at 150kW, leading the market, and sell / lease it. It’s up to the retailers like eVgo and chargepoint for end user. Leaving it up to someone else who don’t have 60 kWh battery to support it is just crazy.

But then again, crushing perfectly good EV(1) is also crazy. Apparently, they haven’t learned their lesson.

They are automakers, not electrical equipment engineering company. They don’t even build electric part of the Bolt themselves, they outsource it to LG. The same is for the chargers, somebody else would design them anyway. There is at least one 120 kW/300A CCS charger model in the market, anybody can order it from Evtec, so nothing much to add by GM itself, other than making sure Bolt can take more than 50 kW charge.

They support workplace charging, which I would say is more important than a charger at a Walmart.

All those chargers look great and I will love to have any but the truth is that my garage is not artsy, I have a Harbor Freight bench, my wife’s potting bench, a Walmart tool rolling chest with mostly Harbor Freight tools, two scooters and two cars. My Volt sleeps outside the garage with the ClipperCreek EVSE cable going under the door. A beautiful charger won’t change a thing, I need for an EVSE to work and work every time and that is what my ClipperCreek has done for the past two years.

BMW’s offerings for the home in North America are 16 or 32 amp 200-240 volt products (presumably, the smaller mostly used for the I8, and the larger mostly used for the I3, although its good they give customers a choice), albeit overpriced. So their ‘home chargers’ in the states are very huge, but don’t deliver more power than the commodity wall boxes at the big box stores.

GM provides very reasonably priced Chinese Bosch Wallboxes, and the travel cord included with the 2016 volt even may be run as is on a 240 volt adapter, for only $25 or so. So what’s not to like?

Audi and Porsche include a charger that is both 110 and 240. The optional housing unit though is $750!!!

So does Tesla. No optional housing cost though.

Volvo’s looks like a modern clock.

Or one of the vertical CD players from the 80s.

Tesla’s SC Design is interesting when you compare them other OEMs.

It has no buttons, other than the one on the end of the plug, to pop your port door open. All screen notifications are via the in-dash touchscreen.

This keeps costs low per installation and all other items (display readout, etc.) are directly paid for by the Tesla Owner.

Very clever leveraging of resources and cost control.

The Volvo EVSE looks a lot like my GE WattStation. I really like the metal covering on the cable.

V2G could sway a lot of us over to LEAF-II from BOLT-EV. As long as Nissan comes to the plate swinging a 60kWh battery.

No mention of the Tesla high power wall connector? Sure, it doesn’t connect to your phone but it’s small, elegant in design, and internally configurable between 40 and 100 amps of power (I’m sure all the other units top out at 40 amps)
