ChargePoint announced a few days ago that the current number of charging points in the Network exceed 15,000 units.  A more accurate number of 15,084 hangs on the ChargePoint website together with a number of 2,071 public station owners.

According to ChargePoint, its network has 70%+ share of all networked public charging stations on four continents including North America, Europe, Asia and Australia.

ChargePoint lists some other milestones like:

Every 10 seconds, a driver connects to a ChargePoint station. By plugging in and charging over 4,000,000 times, ChargePoint drivers have saved over 3.5 million gallons of gasoline and avoided 36 million pounds of CO2 emissions.”

Based on our previous post on the ChargePoint Network growth, we could try to predict how many points will added to the network in 2014.  At the average pace of 350 a month, it could be over 4,000 more.  Perhaps ChargePoint will reach 20,000 by the end of 2014.

While I am glad that they are continuing to grow and seem to have a fairly well run operation, there are some troubling numbers. Particularly, one car connecting every 10 seconds equates to 8640 charges per day (though it’s not clear if each connection actually results in a charge). Based on 15084 stations, that means an average charging station is used once every 1.75 days. Or 210 charges per year per station. That seems like a stunningly low utilization rate. I’m not sure what the average revenue per charge is but it can’t be that much.

I think retrenching and cutting the stations that have less than the system wide average would be a smart move on their part. Also, they should be thinking not so much of growth but placement. Like they say in Real Estate, the top three considerations as Location, Location and Location.

If we are talking about level-2 public chargers then PUT THEM AT DESTINATIONS WHERE PEOPLE WILL SPEND SEVERAL HOURS!

Examples: Theme parks, national parks, movie theatres, big malls, public parking in city downtowns, Zoos, work office parking lots, beaches, etc.

Places NOT to put level 2 chargers: Fast food places, strip malls, grocery stores, etc.

I don’t know, I like chargers at the stores. Target around here has chargers free for the first hour and then they charge after that. Same as Safeway. I make decisions on using stores on these chargers. I come in and shop for an hour and then leave. What better thing to do than charge my FIT EV while I am doing so, and for free.

The problem with L2 chargers (at least the 30 Amp kind) is that most of the sites are places where people spend less than an hour. For example, Walgreen’s jumped on the EV bandwagon early and has L2 chargers at many (most? all?) of their stores. So, who is going to charge for 30-45 minutes while at the drug store? Doesn’t make sense to me. There is a Sears near me that has 2 L2 chargers, I drive by there almost every day and have never seen anyone charging there. Putting them in parking garages, at work, hotels and so on makes a ton more sense. People just weren’t thinking clearly when they started with willy-nilly deployment of EVSEs. @Bryan, I doubt many are like you. Most people just charge at home at night. It seems to be more of a hassle just to save a buck (and probably less than a buck in most cases). The usage patterns I see make me think I am correct on this point.

I certainly don’t question that I am unusual. 🙂 But it just seems reasonable. I am however tight with my money and I figure if I can save a buck with no expenditure I will. 🙂

Getting an extra 20 miles of range while you shop or eat for an hour can help if you have a 38-mile Volt or 84-mile Leaf.

It would be a waste of time for Tesla’a 200+ mile cars however.


Yes but we are looking at installing a ChargePoint charger at the office and while it will be available after hours to anyone the office will use it during the day. There is nothing around except a convenient off ramp from a local highway. I don’t expect a large number of non employee users but it will still be on the list of ChargePoint chargers.

I think this is precisely what should be happening. Whether it is a chargepoint evse or just a simple electrical outlet (cheaper to install) and the electricity cost will be relatively small – especially if it’s only used by employees.

Charging station utilization factors will remain low until there are lots of EVs on the streets. This chicken and egg problem demands business models for charging stations that don’t depend on income from selling electricity. Charge point is well aware of this and they pitch to business owners that want to attract customers for their main business.

Once there are tens of millions of EVs on US roads, then installing charging stations to sell energy might make sense.



Now get out there and build more DC-fast chargers with both chademo and SAE-CCS.

In the greater NYC area, the chargers are typically $2.95/hour. And the ones in parking garages in NYC typically are in the higher priced parking facilities. None of that makes sense, and I’m sure the chargers go almost completely unutilized.

There’s one at Purchase College that’s $3.99/hour. That’s ridiculous.

It isn’t about getting 12 cents of electricity while I am shopping for a half-hour. It is about the extra 4 mile range that helps me use less gas on the way home. Every opportunity I get to drive electric in my volt instead of gas, I take it. Charging during or in between errands allows more all-electric driving on a shopping day. I am trying to use less gasoline throughout the year, and I do appreciate every store owner who has offered me the chance to plug in while I shop. Yes I do plug in at work and that gives me a pure-electric commute, however I never stop by work on a shopping day, so plug-in-friendly stores are the first ones I patronize.
