CHAdeMO Becomes Official Fast Charge Standard In Europe

In late December, without fanfare, CHAdeMO was approved as an official DC fast charging standard in Europe.

CHAdeMO joins Combo2 as the only two DC fast charging standards officially recognized by CENELEC, a European standards organization.

This recognition of CHAdeMO as an official standard further supports the trend in Europe to install fast chargers capable of both CHAdeMO and Combo2.

For CHAdeMO, this is a major win.  The standards battles over DC fast charging is now dead as Europe recognizes both CHAdeMO and Combo2 as being official standards.

Finally. Now, it would have been nice, if CCS in Europe and in the US would be the same, too. But you can’t expect too much 🙂

Speculawyer

That’s the nice thing about standards, there are so many to choose from!

kdawg

And they’re all identically different.

Lensman

LOL! You said it so much better than I had planned to. I think whoever wrote this article does not understand the meaning of “standard”.

To quote “Highlander”: There can be only one!

Seems like the standards committee was composed of a bunch of little kids. Wasn’t it just 2 years ago that Chademo was officially being phased out as obsolete?

Either they’re fixing an embarrassing decision or else they can’t make up their minds, or both.

I’m confused. How is it a standard if the connectors are incompatible and competitive, not complementary nor supplementary? It’s like saying both VHS and BetaMax are standards isn’t it?

Bill Howland

Its much worse than that. Some Rav4EV J1772 vehicle chargers won’t work with some J1772 EVSE’s. And my Tesla Roadster has the same trouble. it won’t work with alot of EVSE’s nor with Hot tub RV outlets.

CounterStrike Cat

Standardization doesn’t mean monopolization.

CounterStrike Cat

That picture is blown out of dimensions.

The Chamo CSS Civil War was a bloody one that took thosands in the from of stuck EV’s but luckly the EV Charger Wars finally came ot a end when ABB invented the Muti Standard Chamo CSS Charger.

kdawg

That text should be written like this.

lol

Wait! Which version of the despecialized edition is that? 🙂
Too much red fraying on the font, did you use the Luxemburg interpositive? 😉

I don’t think the war is over. While CHAdeMO was accepted as an official standard (just as type 1 and type 3 chargers), the EU law still only specifies CCS as the minimum requirement (just like how they specify Type 2 as minimum). So there is still no endorsement of CHAdeMO.

Kosh

All this for just 5 wires….

przemo_li

I think that it will be EU parliament that finish that debacle. Just like they did it with USB for smartphone charging.

Cavaron

Can’t someone just create an adapter to make every DC-plug compatible to every DC-system? Tesla did the CHAdeMO-to-Tesla-adapter already…

krona2k

This ridiculous fiasco over charging standards really annoys me. Are we children? Why can’t we have decided some amazing global standard that would have been as future proof as reasonable, or even better beyond reasonable!

Bill Howland

I’m not a child. If it were up to me it would be a twist lock and a hottub breaker.

Bur then there would be no money in the ridiculously overpriced EVSE’s that you wouldn’t need.

+1 plugging in my coffee pot is not dangerous.
