December’s results are in, as well as the YTD figure for Canada and it’s become obvious now that Canada’s plug-in sales king can’t be knocked off its pedestal.

Once again, the Chevy Volt topped the plug-in sales chart in Canada.

With 80 units sold in December and 931 for the year, the Volt easily beat the plug-in competition.

It’s nearest competitor in terms of sales was likely the Tesla Model S (though we don’t have specific sales figures for the Model S, since Tesla doesn’t release them on a monthly basis.)

However, we can predict that there were probably +/- 40 Model S sedans sold in December. (the law of averages tells us this, since Model S sales have averaged 50 units or thereabout over the course of the last 11 months of confirmed data.  However, only 26 units were sold in October, the latest confirmed figure for the Model S in Canada, so perhaps sales are lower than the 40 we predict).

Canada’s plug-in pack shaped up as follows for December and the year that was 2103:


  • Chevy Volt – December: 80 YTD: 931
  • Tesla Model S – December: ~40  YTD: 530 plus an estimated 80 for the last two months of 2013 = 610
  • Nissan LEAF – December: 28  YTD: 470
  • Toyota Prius Plug In – December: YTD: 212
  • Mitsubsihi i-MiEV – December: 2  YTD:  168

A big hearty “Thank you!” to our neighbors to the North! I just might forgive you for sending us Justin Bieber!

There are people who put deposits down on LEAFs in Canada four months ago, but are still waiting. I wonder how many LEAFs Nissan could have sold if they adequately supplied the Canadian market and invested in infrastructure like DCQC there.

LEAF pricing also isn’t the best up North. Whereas people pay less than invoice in the States, In Canada some dealers even make you pay more than MSRP by requiring you to purchase expensive add-ons like security systems, extended warranties, etc.

It also doesn’t help that packages which are options in the USA are required in Canada, adding to the price. For example, in Canada, if you want the SV, you have to take the quick charger, despite 90% of people East of British Columbia in Canada having no useful access to DCQC.

While a LEAF in Toronto has currently access to just one Level 3 Quick Charger at Mitsubishi HQ in Mississauga, once you make it South into the USA, that access or option included gives you a lot more potential. Not as much as the Tesla Fast Charging, but enough to add value.
Plus the iMiEV friend of mine in Hamilton used it to get his car up to Barrie,
ON last spring to show at Electric Avenue – a part of the Formula North event. Also, most cars are at least taken for a three year lease at the shortest, and I would expect some growth in the DCQC arena in Ontario and other places over that time.
