June was a record-setting month for at least on plug-in electric vehicle in Canada.  Surprisingly, the vehicle that set the record didn’t even top the Canadian plug-in electric sales chart last month.

Once again, it was the Chevy Volt that took the #1 spot on the plug-in electric vehicle sales charts in Canada in June.  With 163 units sold, the Volt edged out the Nissan LEAF by a decent margin.

For the LEAF, its 104 units sold was an all-time record for a single month in Canada:

“The fully-electric Nissan LEAF set an all-time sales record with 104 units sold.”

LEAF sales have only ever exceeded 100 units in a single month twice now in Canada (101 sold in May 2014).

We figure this graphic will shine some perspective on LEAF sales in Canada, in comparison to Nissan sales:

The BMW i3 in its second month sold 28 copies (50 YTD) , while Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid sales were just 5 units last month in Canada.

Tesla Model S sales figures aren’t available in Canada at this time.  Estimating a figure is rather difficult, given the wild swings we’ve seen thus far in terms of monthly sales this year.  Known Tesla Model S sales figures for the year in Canada are as follows:

  • January: 20
  • February: 19
  • March: 119
  • April: 71

Aside from the Volt, LEAF, Model S, BMW i3 and Prius Plug-In, there are the others, all of which are consistently low-volume sellers:

  • Mitsubishi i-MiEV: 12
  • Cadillac ELR: 3
  • Smart Fortwo ED: No data

We’ll have updated data on Ford’s plug-in vehicles soon, as the automaker releases those numbers for Canada on a semi-annual basis.

In terms of total 2013 numbers, here’s how plug-ins fared in Canada:

  • Chevy Volt – 931
  • Tesla Model S – 638
  • Nissan LEAF – 470
  • Smart Fortwo Electric Drive – 222
  • Toyota Prius Plug In – 212
  • Ford C-Max Energi – 199
  • Mitsubishi i-MiEV – 177
  • Ford Fusion Energi – 116
  • Ford Focus Electric – 103
  • Cadillac ELR – 4

The Leaf and Volt have, in the first six months of 2014, almost matched total annual sales for 2013.

Not surprising the Volt has more interest in Canada. With the gas engine generator, it has more flexibility for extreme cold weather cabin heating and addressing cold weather EV range loss.

I suppose the numbers at the bottom of the article are for 2014 year to date (not 2013), right?

i3 sales are missing

Sorry Eperigny,

Canadian sales are reported very unevenly and it sometimes takes several months for all results to drift in…as annoying as that is.

Update: BMW sold 28 i3s in June

For Canada the Volt is the way to go. With the employee pricing special that is in place for July/August they have never been cheaper in Canada – you can get one for $35K employee price. After you factor in the $8200 Ontario Government rebate that brings you into sub $30K territory for a Volt which is an amazing deal.
