It’s time once again to take a look at plug-in electric vehicle sales in Canada.

And this time, for the month of December, the LEAF retained its #1 spot.

The Chevy Volt had been the reigning champ for what seems like forever, but in October, November and now even December, the Nissan LEAF came out on top, but just barely

Nissan LEAF sales checked in at 64 units in Canada in December, breaking the LEAFs 7-month string of 100-plus units sold in Canada.

For 2014, LEAF sales tallied a total of 1,085 in Canada, which is more than LEAF sales in 2011, 2012 and 2013 combined.

Meanwhile, sales of the Chevrolet Volt checked in at 62 units in Canada in December, slightly up from the 58 sold in November, but is still the second worst month for sales for the Volt for 2014.

For 2014, Volt sales equaled a total of 1,521 units, up from 931 sold in 2013 and above the Volt’s previous high of 1,225 sold in 2012.

Tesla Model S sales figures aren’t available in Canada at this time. Estimating a figure is rather difficult this month, given the wild swings we’ve seen thus far and some odd variance at play in December.

We do know between December and January, combined Model S sales should be high enough to make it the market leader, as there were a lot of P85D orders for Canadians that Tesla was trying to get out before year’s end.   Further to those orders, there were reports of some of those cars being delivered around Christmas, but we also know some cars got caught in transit in the US north destined for Canada as well.

Known Tesla Model S sales figures for the year in Canada are as follows:

Tesla Model S Doing Some water Testing

  • January: 20
  • February: 19
  • March: 119
  • April: 71
  • May: 61
  • June: 104
  • July:48
  • August: 25
  • September: 194
  • October: 37
  • YTD excluding November: 698

We don’t yet have figures for BMW i3 in its eight month of availability in Canada, but in its first seven months it sold a total of 191 units and never less than 19 in a single month, nor higher than 34 in a month. So, let’s say that i3 sales in December were ~ 20.

Smart Fortwo ED sales in July checked in at a rather remarkable 79 units, followed by an even more spectacular 133 sold in August. Smart ED sales then fell to only 69 in September, followed by only 9 in October. November’s results are not yet available for the electric Smart, nor are December’s.

Here are the rest of the November results from the typically low-volume sellers in Canada:

  • Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid: 3 (76 YTD)
  • Mitsubishi i-MiEV: 7 (109 YTD)
  • Cadillac ELR: 3 (YTD 44)

Ford’s PHEV sales are unknown for December at this time. Typical monthly volume is ~ 20 C-Max Energis and ~10 Fusion Energis. Likewise, Focus Electric sales are small, in the single digits most months.

Lacking back at 2013 numbers, here’s how plug-ins fared in Canada:

  • Chevy Volt – 931
  • Tesla Model S – 638
  • Nissan LEAF – 470
  • Smart Fortwo Electric Drive – 222
  • Toyota Prius Plug In – 212
  • Ford C-Max Energi – 199
  • Mitsubishi i-MiEV – 177
  • Ford Fusion Energi – 116
  • Ford Focus Electric – 103
  • Cadillac ELR – 4

Even without complete 2014 sales data for some of the plug-in models, it’s still obvious that the plug-in electric car market grew in Canada in 2014.  By how much?  We’re not sure yet.  A lot depends on Tesla’s December sales, which we hope to get in a month or so.

The Smart ED sold out of Canadian inventory due to a deal offered in July->September.

No numbers for Kia Soul EV. From forums, sounds like more than a handful on the road in Nov/Dec.

Ours has been great so far. Got it Dec 19th…

I got mine on Dec. 23rd and am very happy with it, even in cold weather. Just having a trailer hitch installed.
