Now it will be faster and more trouble-free to get your electric car rebate in the state of California.

The Clean Vehicle Rebate Project (CVRP) hopes to further promote EV adoption, especially among lower-income buyers, with its new Rebate Now program. The pilot program will initially launch in San Diego County. If it proves successful, California will apply it to the rest of the state. Officials at the Center for Sustainable Energy (CSE) and CVRP administrators for the Califonia Airs Resources Board (CARB) chose San Diego due to its diverse population.

Consumers will be able to complete a simple online registration process, and once pre-approved, they’ll be eligible for an immediate discount toward the purchase or lease of eligible models. Reducing costs at the time of purchase, through the use of this new electric car rebate scheme, should boost sales.

CSE President Lawrence Goldenhersh explains:

“Car shoppers in San Diego can now get preapproved before they purchase or lease an EV and then transfer the rebate amount directly to the dealership rather than applying for the rebate after the transaction. In just a few simple steps, the car dealership can claim the transferred rebate and use it to lower the customer’s down payment.”

California, through the CVRP, has applied some $480 million in rebates to over 218,000 electric vehicles since 2009. The CSE points out that about 75 percent of all eligible electric vehicle purchases and leases utilized the rebate during its first five years. Rebates vary from $900 to $5,000, depending on vehicle type and powertrain. Lower-income citizens can apply for an additional $2,000 toward their clean vehicle purchase.

Now i have to hurry up and get another ev before this crap get implemented state wide. Wanna bet that the dealers will inflate their prices when they see you have this credit? Just like they do with the fed credit…

Ideally, one wouldn’t tell them that they have the rebate until it comes time to pay. That allows the buyer to work out a best price prior to laying all their cards on the table.

“Ideally”….that’s not how the world works. The dealer would know you have this credit anyway.

Leasehackr

Completely agree.

“…the car dealership can claim the transferred rebate and use it to lower the customer’s down payment.”

Of course they want it to lower the down payment, that means the loan is still just as big and they get the full interest. A smart buyer would keep their down payment the same and use the rebate to lower the amount financed. But the dealerships don’t like that.

With all those leasing it doesn’t matter. They’re just throwing money away anyway.

Who is throwing money? Not the people leasing, that’s for sure.

Buy a Tesla & avoid the dealerships?

Great idea! I got a lease that reflected the discount, instead of buying and not knowing.
