On November 6, BYD unveiled in Rio de Janeiro its latest version of its electric bus K9, the K9-12d.

“d” is of course not related in any way to the Tesla Model S “D”. This is just the localized version for the South American market with four doors, 24 seats and range of some 250 km.

The Chinese company plans to build a new assembly plant in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 2015. According to China Daily, capacity will be for 500 units annually. Besides Brazil, customers are waiting for BYD electric buses in Columbia, Chile and Uruguay.

As it turns out, there are a lot of obstacles that newcomers like BYD must leap over:

“BYD has completed the commissioning process in many large cities, including Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Salvador.

“To protect the local bus industry, Brazilian government put forward a set of special sizes and standards for almost all parts of a bus, which adds burden for international companies to enter this market, including Chinese ones,” said Tyler Lee, general manager of BYD Brazil.

Despite the many challenges, BYD still sees Brazil as a promising market.”

A front motor could be handy in extending range and improving performance in hilly areas and inclement weather. Doubt a 100kW front motor would add more than $15k to the bill of materials.

I still say whether you pick the Tesla philosophy in battery sizing or just go w/ multiple chargers depends on the route profile.
