Almost a year passed by since we first saw spy shots of the all-electric T5 truck from BYD.

It seems that the Chinese company is still working on this project, as a recent report was released with new photos.

The only data on range and top speed remains the same at 400 km (around 250 miles) and 50 kph (31 mph).

We don’t know what is the status of this project and how well such an EV could sell in China.  However, the source article stated that light ICE trucks are still “as cheap as televisions in China,” so probably it will not be easy for BYD to make inroads with this electric truck.

T5 does look rather similar to Smith Newton…doesn’t it?

Seems like an overly large range and overly low top speed.

The government should start mandating EV trucks like this in the big polluted cities. No idling, no diesel exhaust, charge them while you are loading/unloading them . . . it could make a dent on local pollution.

Hey Spec, I’m with you on the limited top speed and excessive range. As you might know, I have opined before elswhere that, I think the market for stuff like this is going to represent a larger proportion of the total LCV market, than electric cars are going to be of the total market for personal automobiles. There’s less chance of arbitrary long distance journeys, hence less range anxiety. In addition, company fleet managers can more quickly justify the added cost, by taking into acount significant reductions in fueling and maintenance costs.

LCVs already available or in the prototype/testing phase include, the Mitsubishi Canter e-cell, the Renault Maxity Electric, the Nisaan eNT-400, the Smith Newton, the Nisan eNV-200, the Renault Kangoo and the Mercedes Vito e-cell.

I’m certain that Volkswagen, with their new found entusiasm for electric propulsion will either release something based on their Volkswagen e-Co-Motion Concept, showed at the 2013 Geneva motor show or their Caddy blue-e-motion that, they have been testing since at least 2011.

I like the long range. There will be plenty of options for shorter range but not many companies dare to go long range and large batteries like BYD and Tesla.

50 km/h might work in China but surely we will see a higher speed if sold elsewhere.
90 km/h would be enough though.

Speeds are relative to traffic loads. The oxymoron of rush Hour’s where you might be in a rush, but the traffic flow is not, says that a top speed of even 70 Kph would likely do the job in multi stops running in and through most large cities. The truck, needs to maintain efficiency for the large range, and while a city might only be 20 – 40 miles across, with the many local delivery points, they could well drive some 200 plus miles a day (320 Kms)! As stated, the city delivery truck, that loads on the outskirts at a fixed point – the warehouse, can be managed for range needs far easier than a family car, as its needs for a given range are better known, and more consistent. Tesla’s Battery Swap technology would work well for Semi rigs to: if Tesla built a small fleet of 20 or so, they could demo it for long hauls of 1,000 + miles with strategically placed swap stations for the trucks. An 18 Ton Beer Truck, operating in Europe.
300 KM Range and 240 kwH Batterys. Full charging with cheap 63A AC -> 43kw in 6 Hr.
Where ? Everywhere. CEE63 is all yo need.
