BYD recently uploaded an interesting webinar on electric buses.

The first half is on BYD products. The Chinese company already has sold more than 1,300 EV buses and has orders for another 4,000. But the plans for the future are bold – in 2020 BYD expects to produce more electric buses annually (maybe 40,000) than Nissan produced LEAFs in 2014.

There are also two new models coming, one in 2015 (18-meters long) and another in 2016 (short shuttle bus).

The second part of the video is on Stanford University’s electric buses – 13 BYDs in total. Stanford University’s goal is to have up to 80% electric buses in service by 2020.

Micheal Austin, Vice President at BYD America – BYD Motors is the largest electric-bus manufacturer in the world with over 1300 battery electric buses completed that run entirely off battery power lasting up to 24 hours on a single 2-4 hour charge.
Ward Thomas, Transportation Operations at Stanford University – The Stanford Marguerite, the university’s transit service, currently operates 13 40-foot electric buses on and off campus, providing free service for faculty, staff, students and the surrounding community.”

Hmm. If BYD hits its 40,000 pa target by 2020 at 324kwh per bus that is around 13GW demand if they sell no electric cars at all.

Does that count as a gigafactory?

BYD said in 2007

It will become Chinese biggest car maker in 2012
it will become world’s biggest car maker in 2-15

lol

so stupid

They’ve got 1,300 of their electric buses on the road and are the world’s leading producer.
They make the Qin, the biggest selling non-Kei plug in car in China, and own the electric taxi market there also.
They have built the world’s biggest battery grid back up facility.

What’s your beef?

Other takeaways from a great video:

Battery electric cars are economic right now, and there is no wait period for the technology to mature further.

The batteries on the bus can be run down to 1% without voiding the guarantee.

Taxis using the BYD battery have done 350,000 miles over 5 years.

It is a shame that they are so heavy, but that is one heck of a battery.

I like the simple EVSE setup that BYD uses… And if you have too many buses compared to your infrastructure, you only need one cord to the bus and you may you the other cord to simultaneously charge another bus!

So, managers planning service entrance expansions and/or additional wiring as more buses are purchased do not have to worry about charging in the interim. They can purchase many more buses and install the infrastructure later (to be ready for even more buses later on).
