BMW announced that the world premier of the X5 Xdrive40e plug-in hybrid will take place at the 16th International Automobile & Manufacturing Technology Exhibition (Auto Shanghai) from 22 – 29 April 2015.

“The first plug-in hybrid production car from the BMW core brand is a Sports Activity Vehicle, and it is celebrating its world premiere in Shanghai. Permanent all-wheel drive and the BMW EfficientDynamics eDrive technology endow the BMW X5 xDrive40e with sensational sportiness and supreme poise on the one hand and outstanding efficiency on the other. With a total system output of 230 kW/313 hp generated by a four-cylinder petrol engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology and a synchronous electric motor, the BMW X5 xDrive40e achieves a combined fuel consumption of 3.4 – 3.3 litres per 100 kilometres (83.1 – 85.6 mpg imp) and a combined electricity consumption of 15.4 – 15.3 kWh over the same distance. CO2 emissions come in at 78 – 77 grams per kilometre (figures according to ECE test cycle for plug-in hybrid vehicles, may vary depending on the tyre format specified).”

Sales in the US are scheduled for this Fall. EPA range using 9.0 kWh battery stands at 13 miles.

Synchronous electric motor integrated in the 8-speed Steptronic transmission together with a four-cylinder gasoline engine can propel the BMW X5 xDrive40e from 0 to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds and onto a 130 mph top speed (75 miles per hour in all-electric mode).

Never thought this would make it to market before the Model X

Just the way the EU calculates CO-emissions. They don’t even calculate the CO-emissions to produce the electricity in at all – not everybody has solar and uses this as the sole source of electricity.

Think of it as a super hybrid. This system allows a 2.0 liter 4 cylinder to power an X5 which otherwise would have at minimum a 3.0l 300HP inline 6 cylinder. The extra torque boost down low makes it workable. And better mpg overall. Think of the plug in capability as an extra benefit. I drive 15 miles a day to and from work, so it would still limit my gas usage greatly.

Besides, it goes further than a plug-in Prius, in driving that would normally use much more gas than the Prius, so give credit where its due.

77 g/co2/km? That’s 2g over the London congestion charge limit – no free pass for you BMW. Expect a naf, cobbled together solution to that problem for the UK bound X5 xDrive40e.

I’m thinking something along the lines of the i3 modified software that tells the car the fuel tank is smaller than it actually is in the US. BTW Has anyone found a way around that yet?

Yes, owners can recode the firmware for the “bigger” (.5 more) tank. It’s not official, but it works.

At least the Californian “compliance cars” are pure EVs and thus emit nothing. These European “compliance cars” are PHEVs with such small batteries that eliminate very few gas miles . . . assuming the drivers even bother to plug them in.

And I suspect some drivers of these unbatteried PHEVs will clog up chargers for hours when their vehicles are done charging in only an hour or so.


I think the 2 sets of legislation work really well together one set focuses on rolling out a small number of revolutionary new cars the other forces reduction in co2 emissions across the board both should end in the same place.

Not my cup of tea for the price, but BMW Diehards will love it.

This, along with several other main stream station wagons coming out in the near future, will chip away at the market for the Tesla X. I’m sure I don’t have to tell anyone at Tesla that – I’m sure they are carefully watching these products’ sales.
