It’s clear to us that BMW is now one of the world’s strongest automotive supporters of plug-in vehicles.

Want proof?  Just check out the trio of plug-ins BMW brought to LA.

We can think of only one other automaker who had 3 or more plug-in vehicles on display, so BMW is at least making its case for becoming one of the strongest supporters of plug-in vehicles among major automakers.

Here we present the BMW i3, BMW i8 and BMW X5 eDrive PHEV.  The last of which were told will enter production April 2015.

Excellent pictures Tom!

I’m loving that X5 PHEV. Super nice.

This is the first i’ve heard of the X5. Is it a concept car, or something slated for production?

Shown is still a concept, but it enters production for sure early next year.

Any details/specs???

Which is the other automaker with 3 or more supposed to be?

Porsche?
Volkswagen?

GM had the Volt, the ELR, and the Spark EV, all currently for sale, at least in CA.

Ford has the Focus Electric, Fusion Energi, and C-Max Energi. but I’m wondering if were they on display at the show….

That XDrive PHEV may be the plug-in car that dominates BMW’s plug-in line up. I think a lot of people are not ready for the smaller & unconventional aspects of the i3. (And the i8 is a niche halo car joke.)

I disagree with your i8 description. I suspect that much of its hybrid technology will be used in other vehicles. Its engine is already a Mini option.

The i8 is a niche halo car joke.

The 3 cylinder was developed for the Mini not the i8 even though it debuted in the i8.

Because BMW is nowhere near as stupid as to debut a drivetrain in a mass production car then four years later debut it in a premium coupe at over twice the price.

The chargers look pretty Neato too, if you have a spare wall to mount one on.

You have to pay a lot of money for “Neato”.

If you’ve spent $10,000 to ‘accessorize’ your garage with all BMW Bric-A-Brac, whats another $1100 for a 7200 watt docking station?

Its a Bimmer, still.

In the UK the government pays half the price for home charging docks. Plus, worth having just not to have to go to the gas station.
