BMW Plug-In Electric Car Sales Up 31.2% In 2017

BMW i + BMW iPerformance + MINI PHEV sales in the U.S. – December 2017

BMW Group closes the year 2017 in the U.S. with its second best monthly result of plug-in electric car sales – 2,792 (up 59%) and up 31.2% for the year.

Plug-ins accounted for 7.2% of all BMW and MINI sales in December.

For the full year, BMW increased deliveries by 31.2% year-over-year to 21,208. On average, 6.0% of total sales were all-electric or plug-in hybrids.

In 2016, 16,107 plug-in sold accounted  for only 4.4% of total BMW/MINI sales.

Considering the further expansion of the lineup in 2018, BMW might see nearly one tenth of its business in the U.S. as plug-in sales.

Lots of BMW i3 haters here, but amazing how many review’s on line calling it exceptionally fun.

Stumbled across a fairly skeptical, non technical reviewer who usually drives a 911 Porsche. Look how he raves about the bank vault solidity of the i3 and how he feels perfectly at home driving this coming out of the Porsche. And this is someone that isn’t warmed up by the looks of the car even..

Look how composed the new traction control is on the water pad.

I think the reason there are so many “haters” is that for the price you get so little. The mile per dollar is very high on this car. BWMs don’t tend to age well from a repair standpoint as parts and labor are high. Also according to CR the i3 is the least reliable BMW.

About Consumer Reports, and statistics.
They don’t report their sample size.
And I’d assume that it’s small.
Therefore, you’re going to get skewed by lemon’s, that might not be indicative of the general population.
I for one am happy with the i3, but, I don’t have the time, and being problem free, I don’t have the motivation to filling out the long car survey.

Also, the 2014’s did have problems that were resolved with factory recalls. But, if you look at the i3 facebook group, your not going to see a lot of problems discussed.

If “mile per dollar” were the consideration, why would someone buy ANY electric vehicle?

If you drove a Prius for 300,000 miles it will pay for itself, a free car.
A Prius Prime would pay for 80% of it’s cost.
A BMW i3 would pay for 50% of it’s cost.
But, the i3 would be Fun to Drive for 300,000 miles.
So, you’re paying a premium to enjoy the ride.

In Norway you pay about $350 for a 5 year service agreement on the i3.
Compared to an ICE car that is a steal.

Solid as a rock, advanced construction, etc.

Keep in mind the BEV would have been less costly, more sporty, etc. And the s model would have improved the review that much more.

Yes, the highway stability is amazing.
It breaks the rule about highways and wheelbase.
Notice that that front windshield has got a steep curve to it.
And that there’s no overhang front and rear.
But, it’s got to be the frame and the BMW suspension.
The engineering of the car is amazing.

But, buying is old school.
Look at this as a lease.
Compare leases with a Prius Prime, and this comes in better, and it’s 100% better in all categories to a Prime.

Then, after the 3 year lease, it’s got a great Buyer’s price on the used car market. They don’t sit on the sales lot’s long. Those that know about these cars snap them up.

And the reason for leasing is the advancements in self-driving coming out, the automatic collision prevention software making rapid improvements, along with better batteries coming in for the same price.

Not to mention as a “city” car, Parking Anxiety is much reduced, if not totally eliminated. If there’s a parking spot, unless the last car was a Smart, you’re going to fit.

One thing I can promise: No Buyer’s Remorse about buying/leasing this car. It’s very civilized along with very fun.

If buying the exactly most practical car on earth were the requirement then we’d all drive a Toyota. Luckily that’s not the case. There is no maximum practicality argument for ANY BMW on the market so using that metric the company has no right to exist. Sometimes ‘better’ is not range, is not subjective opinions of style, is not your own personal needs, is not about your idea of a budget. Tesla would not exist if practical was the most important thing. It requires non-practical thinking for Tesla to exist. Some day soon perhaps…but not with the model 3….Tesla may in fact be the most practical solution for the most people. It is not. Nor was the X or S. But they are good and people feel they are worth the money. That worth is a different thing for different people. For some, the worth of an S is the future not the present. Just the fundamental materials science BMW had to do to make the i3 makes the car ‘worth’ it. This will pay dividends for decades to everyone.

You are absolutely right. Most carbon fiber reinforced cars are $200,000 plus vehicles. Monroe and Associates takes apart cars for research, with tons of engineer’s on board. The I3 in their opinion is revolutionary.

Considering the premium RWD hatchback I3 only lists for about $10,000 more than a Chevy Bolt, and all the innovative engineering in it, the I3 is actually a steal.

And that’s after 35 years of driving 20+ different cars, foreign & domestic!

Looking forward to upgrading to the 2019 model!
