BMW i8 Versus BMW M4 – Drag Race Video

MAR 31 2015 BY STAFF 8

BMW i8 vs. BMW M4 in a straight line? The folks over at Autobild TV take the two most unlikely competitors and put them in a drag race to find out which one is faster.

The BMW M4 is powered by a 3.0-liter BMW M TwinPower Turbo engine developing 425 horsepower and  550 Nm (406 lb-ft) of torque. This engine combines two mono-scroll turbochargers with variable valve control (Double-VANOS and Valvetronic) and high-precision direct injection for a smooth and efficient power delivery, coupled in this case with the standard 7-speed DCT. It’s a performance car, specially with the intelligent lightweight construction with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastic makes the M3 light, fast, and agile.

BMW i8 Versus BMW M4

On the other hand, BMW i8 is the future of hybrid sportscars.

*Editor’s Note: This post appears on BMWBLOG.  Check it out here.

BMW i8 uses a plug-in hybrid system consisting of a turbocharged three-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engine and BMW eDrive technology in the form of an electric drive system.

The 1.5-liter combustion engine develops 170 kW/231 hp and drives the rear wheels of the BMW i8, while the 96 kW/131 hp electric drive sends its power to the front wheels and allows an all-electric range of up to 35 kilometers (22 miles) and a top speed of 120 km/h (75 mph).

Let’s have a look.

No P85D otherwise it will be embarrassing for BMW.

Although either one of these could cruise on the autobahn at 150mph for hours, unlike the P85D. And with a 119mph trap speed, aside from the AWD launch, the M4 will handily walk away from any Tesla. The M4 is so easy to mod. Although it is new, tuners already have over 600whp from them….beating many Supercars. They can run 11flat qtr miles with traction and very little mods. Will be in the 10s before you know it. Tesla’s wont hit 10s with its current trap speeds.

Why you mesure the cars with the Autobahn speed it is funny that people from US talk about the German freeway like they were in Arizona or Florida, I don’t know of anyone who take their cars to the German Autobhan from Ameriica.

“either one of these could cruise on the autobahn at 150mph for hours, unlike the P85D”

Name any stretch of the Autobahn where you can cruise unrestricted due to no speed limit or little congestion for hours. Besides what percent of the population has the need to cruise for hours on the Autobahn or drive daily on the Nurburgring? I’ll take the car that is the fastest while driving 99.99% of the time.

It’s sort of like saying a Jeep is faster than a P85D because it can drive for hours at 60 mph on a bumpy dirt road but the P85D can’t.

Looks like a natural follow on from the Top Gear comparison where Clarkson summed it up by saying the M3 (M4) is the best of where we’ve come from, and the i8 is where we’re going.

Well said.

@Sivad, on the A2 from Berlin to Hannover and beyond you can go unlimited for hours. Just one example of many. Even more if you count places where you may have just a few speed limits for a moment because of noise reduction etc. Watch your claims and questions 😉

Teslas are great but not great for the Autobahn (yet) if you want to go fast. Why can’t people just accept that certain cars have certain limits and e cool with it? Tesla is super fast off the line but BMWs are much more useful on the Autobahn still.

I agree though, in the US who cares how good a car accelerates above 90???

You can’t beat an electric AWD off the line…

Also, it is kind of unfair considering the price…

I would expect the i8 to win hands down.
