Recently, BMW flew some automotive journalists to the Los Angeles, California area for Round One of the BMW i8 test drives.  Several i8s were driven some 100 miles to be evaluated by the automotive press.  The drives included some city time, some highway driving and then a couple of hours on twisty mountain roads.

Here are images of some of the BMW i8s being tested in and around Los Angeles, California.

Does the I3 hit the streets today?

Looks doubtful. The i3 US launch has been an absolute mess. BMW tells us it will launch, then it never does. The official first launch day was April 28th. Never happened. Then it was yesterday…never happened. Now today or maybe next week or…who knows.

How do you define launch? I saw one on the street two weekends ago. Are we waiting for an official event from BMW?

Launch as in sold to and registered by a private individual. That has not yet happened, though some i3s, ordered by private individuals, have been sitting at US ports for a couple of weeks now. W/o a monroney sticker (EPA ratings) the vehicle cannot be sold or legally registered in the US. You are seeing pre-production i3s here for test drive purposes. All of those will have to go back to Germany, as they can’t be permanently registered in the US.

Definitely a beautiful automobile.

..looks like a great photographer, too. This $135,000 car will turn heads, even if the effort of plugging it only saves about $2.

Looks great… But with the high sticker price, I doubt they’ll sell very many. Lump it in with the Cadillac ELR.. Expect double-digit sales each month.

I’ll buy one just to put it in the Electric Car Guest Drive. Then you can all drive it. Seriously.
