The true joy of owning any plug-in vehicle is operating it in electric-drive mode.

Here, BMW explains the “electric driving” aspect of the BMW i8.

For reference, the BMW i8 features a plug-in hybrid system consisting of a turbocharged three-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo gas engine and BMW eDrive technology.  The 1.5-liter engine develops 231 hp and drives the rear wheels of the BMW i8.  Meanwhile, a 96 kW/131 hp electric drive unit sends power to the front wheels, providing an optimistic all-electric range of up to 22 miles at speeds of up to 75 mph.

Pricing for the BMW i8 in the US starts at $135,700.  The first US-bound i8s should be in dealerships by July.

Does anyone know what the 0-60 time is when driving in all-electric mode?

It has the same range as a C-Max Energi. It has a lower top-speed than the Energi. I hope it can at least match the 0-60, otherwise that would be pretty sad.

Yeah, bloody embarrassing 🙁

Slower than the Volt…

What’s the 0-60 on the Energi in electric mode? Gas+electric is supposed to be 8.5.

This car is beautiful.

So was the Fisker

Not a lot about the i3 I like, except for the Tron-Style digital dash layout. Very refreshing when compared to other more conservative German automakers, like VW or MB.

It’s a lovely car, if you have the coin, and that is a lot of coins, go for it.
Not a car for old rich fat guys, just saying.
