BMW i Range Will Expand To Include Electric SUVs, Trademarked Names Filed
DEC 8 2017 BY MARK KANE
BMW seems very much interested in the eventual expansion of its BMW i sub-brand through SUVs – an entire lineup of electric SUVs perhaps.
At least that is what comes to mind on the news that BMW has secured the iX1, iX2, iX3, iX4, iX5, iX6, iX7, iX8 and iX9 names.
X was so far used by BMW for SUVs, while the i is strightly related to the electrification (BMW i, BMW iPerformance).
In the past, BMW also registered all the straight i-series names: i1, i2, i3, i4, i5, i6, i7, i8 and i9, three years in advance of i3 production, and aslo E1, E2, E3, E4, E5, E6, E7, E8 and E9 (just in case the “i” will went out of fashion we suppose).
A year ago BMW promised to introduce the all-electric BMW X3 in 2020, so at least one of the new naming slots will be used soon, the iX3.
We don’t know how many more electric X vehicles are in the pipeline, and whether or not BMW is gearing up for an all-electric assault or is planning to include plug-in hybrids, and to what degree.
