BMW has reportedly increased production of its BMW i3 by 45% to meet demand that’s been well above the automaker’s initial expectations.

As Business Week reports:

“The premium manufacturer in recent weeks has raised daily output to 100 vehicles from 70 previously at the factory in Leipzig, Germany, where the model is assembled.”

That’s according to Harald Krueger, BMW production chief.

Krueger goes on to say that BMW i3 production has already surpassed 5,000 units in 2014 and suggests that BMW could indeed produce somewhere in the ballpark of 20,000 i3s in 2014 alone.

Quoting Krueger:

“Following the market introduction in Europe, we’re now rolling out the i3 in the U.S.  The U.S. will be the largest market for the i3.”

The first BMW i3 are now arriving in the US.  We expect to report first full-month sales of the i3 in May.  We suspect that initial sales volumes will be relatively high, but it remains to be seen if the i3 will have staying power in the US plug-in segment.

Maybe the freaky design wasnt a bad idea after all. Apparently we have enough freaky people asking for it 🙂

IMHO, it is selling in spite of the freaky design and for the following reasons:

– Established trusted up-scale brand.
– Great acceleration and handling.
– About half the price of Tesla

IMO, they would sell far less if it was ugly/slow like a Prius/iMiev/Leaf. And they would sell far more if it was faster or looked like any other BMW.

I drove the Leaf and didn’t find it slow. You do have to be hard on the gas to get it to go.

I think they program the gas pedal curve so you have to really punch it to get fast acceleration and this may make it feel slow.

Probably so most people won’t burn through charge.

News is affirming that BMW may be making money on this thing. Otherwise, it still pays off as a race for share, in a developing segment.

Bmw is surprised because they are thinking like car people, not like people who buy cars.

It was a bold move by BMW, but it is paying off and puts BMW several years ahead of its competitors with CFRP being the core tech.

BMW will use CFRP not just for the i3 and i8 but throughout the whole lineup as they gain experience, ramp up production of CFRP, and drive down the cost of lightness.

It’s catch up time for the other car makers.

This is not a compliance car for one thing. The reason why it is not a compliance car is that they are going to start selling this in central Virginia April 29. Virginia is one of the most anti EV states out there meaning it’s going to have stand on it’s own with out any incentives to play in Virginia.

Also being sold all over Europe, Australia, and soon in China, Japan, South Korea, and India.

Nope not Australia, have delayed the launch to satisfy world demand.

The car is selling b/c it is a great price for an electric that is BMW quality interior and with the REx can go 180 miles (same as a 60kwh tesla but 40-50% cheaper). reality is price is a hugely important part of the equation here. I also think people understate how forward looking this car is (first mass produced carbon fiber car). I also think the REx is a genius design/idea – it basically makes the car affordable by cutting out 50% of the battery that you rarely use any way given that no EV (including a Tesla) is a realistic distance car for most users

It is too impractical for families to have staying power in the US. Except for the first year, it is unlikely to sell more than 500 per month.

Realistically, it is practical for a family of 4 in any country, as proven by the initial family of 4 purchasers of non-US origin taking road trips.

We’ve just been brainwashed into believing families need 7-seater SUVs for something as little as a family of 3: 2 adults in front, 1 kid in 2nd row, diaper bag in 3rd row, stroller in trunk.

Awesome! I knew there was a pent-up demand for German-made EV within Germany since so many people have PV panels that make lots of their own electricity.

Imagine how many they could sell if they designed a good-looking car! 😉

It IS a great looking car, maybe a couple of months ahead of mainstream that s it.

And there are really few families with 4 children and grandparents living in a country house left these days.

I think the take rate will be high at first as it is with most hot new cars, but it will not having the staying power of the Leaf. I am counting on this as If I decide its my best option (longer range leaf is a dud or a no show) hoping to buy once the first year of demand is satisfied and the ground stock is snow covered!

Flop? It’s the second most selling EV in europe only behind the Leaf. Haven’t seen all the numbers for march yet but it will probably drop down to third because of a great month for the Tesla.

100 cars/day x 365 days year = 36,500 cars. they said they raised production, why do you say it isn’t selling?

Depends how you calculate it. I am not sure about the auto industry as they can sometimes run 24/7 but a lot of people use 200 days for a production year as it accounts for weekends, re-fits, Christmas, etc.. some use 220 or 240. There are about 260 week days in a year.

Too little, too few.

The more countries they introduce this car, the more dealers have to buy some test cars and showroom models.

It’s a little bit like the Samsung vs. Apple sales of smartphones. Samsung counts a sale as a phone that has left their factory to the wholesaler. Apple counts the sale when the sale is done to the end customer or store it directly delivers to.

So if BMW wants to put an i3 in every dealership they have already sold a couple of hundreds to the dealers who have to buy the car.
