On the subjects of handling and performance, here’s a glance at what BMW Blog says:

“The i3 was not designed to scorch an autocross as it does – these abilities are secondary to design objectives in other areas. For instance, the i3 – being an animal of the urban-jungle – requires a very tight turning radius and quick steering for easy maneuverability through parking lots and congested city streets. That it is instilled with go-kart steering is a bonus. The i3′s uber-light curb weight was a design target for reasons of increased efficiency and mileage – that this curb weight allows the i3 to change direction quicker than many sports cars is a cherry on top of the whipped-creme on top of the cup-cake.”

“So quick was the i3 through this wet autocross that my hands were challenged to keep up – I’ve never driven any BMW product so nimble through cones. I reckon that a stock i3 could trounce most auto-crossing M cars through tight courses with plentiful direction changes and short scoots between turns.”

“I’d also fancy a stab at my local BMW Club’s autocross championship. I reckon the i3 would give a whole slew of M cars a run for their money.”

I’m still waiting for an EV with a dial that allows me to turn it up to 11. For those times that I “need that extra push over the cliff”

I think that if an EV has 2 power modes, the eco mode should be quite fun but it should be the default. The second “normal” mode should be an utter no-compromises, no-torque-sacrificed, energy-gulping-when-you-ask-for-it blast to drive and it should be called “turbo”. I’m glad that a lot of EVs are finally putting in a sport/turbo mode in addition to the old eco mode.

Bottom line, they should always program in a turbo mode and it should be as close to what the hardware can give you and still be safe and not fly apart! 🙂

Correct me if I’m wrong, but everything I’ve read indicates that the Tesla Model S volume control does go to 11.

Of course, there is no mention of the fact that the electric drive train provides a responsiveness that ICEs could only dream of.

ON average, that is true.

But a race driver knows to keep the ICE in its powerband with manual shifting.

When a well tuned ICE is in its powerband and right gear, the responsiveness is almost no different….

The difference is the powerband of the Electric motor is FAR Wider than an ICE….

i5 sedan, please!

Gee and we heard in early reviews that it did terrible in the cones because of its skinny tires. Maybe the early reviewers had a slight prejudice.

Inertia. This is where the diet BMW put this thing will pay off. Auto-crosses are almost nothing but transitions. And since an M3 weighs w/in a 100lbs of a Volt (~3,700-3,800lbs), it isn’t hard to see how a ~2,700lb i3 might bring home a trophy. Still, not sure about the 155 tires, but here’s where the “skateboard” gets to distribute the braking front and back. No dive. Food for thought.

The cool part about it all is that after proving something to the ICE camp, it will only take two i3’s, to have some real fun.
