Only one plug-in vehicle landed on BBC Top Gear’s top 15 cars of 2014, but what position it landed in is what’s important: #1

In crowning a champ for 2014 Car Of The Year, Top Gear selected the BMW i8:

And our car of 2014 is…

The BMW i8!

“The i8 is a milestone in the annals of automotive history and a glorious statement for an exciting and positive future. The i8 delivers – and then some.”

“It’s the kind of car we should celebrate, a beautiful vision of the future, delivered now. A car that tells us the future will be different, but still exciting. The i8 never places its technology in the way of simple enjoyment, and, despite the complexity of that mixed-media drivetrain, it’s all so easy to use, so natural, so right. And it has flip-up doors. Nothing says excitement like a set of beetle-wing portals.”

“We could have named the i8 Green Car of the Year, but it’s so much more than that. It’s Top Gear magazine’s Car of the Year. It’s the BMW i8.”

Of course they would… It’s German & burns oil. 😛

but, it burns very little oil! So little in fact that it could do well with synthetic hydrocarbons. There are several pilot plants in Germany that are aiming to produce synthetic transportation fuels from surplus renewable energy generation.

Not to be a stig in the mud, but I think Top Gear is prejudicial and that the Model D is a superior vehicle.

Model D is not exactly a new car model, it’s a sub model. And it’s not evaluated yet by top gear, since delivery only began couple of days ago.

I dont know if people know the full importance of this. For years Top Gear has been hostile and dismissive to anything with a plug.

The fact that they named ANY electrified vehicle as their #1 pick is astonishing.

And Top Gear has a huge following..

Things like this will help EVs gain acceptance.

Fair point…. Even Jeremy Clarkson is a now a convert.

Top Gear has always been against anything with plugs. But this is a great start.

I think it has something to do with BMW.

Top Gear has always been biased toward BMW. Now, there is finally a car that they can enjoy and has a plug. It is a good start.
