Bay Area AltCar Expo

Bay Area AltCar Expo

AltCar Expo—the nation’s leading forum for green car ride and drives, public education and demonstration of the latest green technology vehicles—is expanding to the San Francisco Bay Area this year. The event will take place on Friday and Saturday, March 14 – 15, 2014, from 10 am to 5 pm, at the Craneway Pavilion in Richmond, CA.

The Expo will present the most extensive array of green vehicles in one place, including: electric, hybrid electric, natural gas and hydrogen vehicles. Most are available to test drive and many may even be purchased during the Expo. The event will feature a number of North American vehicle debuts, lectures and demonstration opportunities.

The Friday conference portion begins at 8:30 am and is directed primarily to elected officials, private and public fleet owners, municipalities and industry. The Saturday program will begin at 9 am, and will feature local plug-in vehicle owners hosted by the San Francisco BayLEAFs with support from Nissan North America and eVgo. Refreshments will be served courtesy of Whole Foods Market Berkeley. The vehicle and booth display areas will be open on both days, from 10 am – 5 pm

The AltCar Expo is free and open to the public. If you wanted to sign up for the owner meetup and the Saturday program, you may do so via Eventbrite.

*Couple of notes regarding EV charging at the venue: there are six ChargePoint stations, which will be available to attendees. Nissan LEAF drivers should be able to quick charge at the venue or at a commercial CHAdeMO station nearby.

Hanlees Nissan at 3277 Auto Plaza in Richmond is 9 miles north of the venue. The dealership has agreed to allow attendees to charge up. The eVgo station at 5959 Shellmound in Emeryville will be unlocked on Saturday all day, and will provide LEAF drivers a free quick charge without an RFID card. This CHAdeMO station is 9 miles south of the venue.

The AltCar Conference is sponsored by the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, the Association of Bay Area Governments, San Francisco Clean Cities, East Bay Clean Cities, Clean Cities Silicon Valley and other partners.

FYI, the 6 charging stations have a total of 8 J1772 plugs (2 with a single plug and 2 with dual plugs).
The stations charge at a maximum of 6kW since they’re limited to 25A.
I won’t be there as I’m out of town, but enjoy!

Thank you for sharing the details, Marc! Sorry to miss you on Saturday, hope you will have a good trip.

My pleasure. The stations are usually locked to SunPower employees (I work there) but we’ve decided to open them up to support the event 🙂

Thank you, that’s much appreciated! We worked with the Expo organizers and will be bringing two mobile CHAdeMO DC quick chargers as well. But there can be never enough charging stations 😀

Marc, we are apparently only able to use six of the charging plugs. This is because the Expo organizers were given only one ChargePoint card. When you swipe it the second time on a dual-head unit, it terminates the first session.

Are the stations normally free? — if so, people could use their own ChargePoint cards to unlock the stations.

Interesting that Volt is missing from that picture list…

Good observation! Yes, according to the Expo organizers, GM will not partake in the event.

Probably too busy prepping for Federal Investigators over their latest recall fiasco…

And so is Tesla?

Wilson, no, unfortunately they are locked and available to SunPower employees only. The cards you and I carry won’t work there.
