Steve Sutcliffe of Autocar goes to Scotland to test drive the new BMW i8.

BMW i8 uses a plug-in hybrid system consisting of a turbocharged three-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engine and BMW eDrive technology in the form of an electric drive system.

The 1.5-liter combustion engine develops 170 kW/231 hp and drives the rear wheels of the BMW i8, while the 96 kW/131 hp electric drive sends its power to the front wheels and allows an all-electric range of up to 35 kilometers (22 miles) and a top speed of 120 km/h (75 mph).

BMW i8 weighs 1490 kg curb weight and sits at 46 centimeters above the asphalt – lower than any other production cars of the BMW Group. Just like other sport cars from Munich, the weight is distributed equally between the front and rear axle.

The first plug-in hybrid sportscar will debut in the United States in July of this year and is also the second model of the new BMW i sub-brand. As with the i3, the core of the car is the LifeDrive architecture with carbon passenger cell which gives the i8 a particularly low weight.

In Germany, the BMW i8 starts at €126,000, while in the UK it will cost £ 99,125. The U.S. market will also get the BMW i8 in 2014 at a base price of $135,700.

I love this car.. I’d probably rather have it than a Tesla Model-S. Too expensive for me, though.

I think the car would be even more to my liking if it were more electric and less gas. So, for example, just use the same range extender that the i3 uses and give me a bit more battery and a bit more electric torque.

Tesla looks better than the i8, it is design perfection, while the i8 is not.

Nosecone of Model S is way ugly

Agreed. I love everything about the Model S design except the nosecone.

i8 vs Model S is a wash for me in styling. I don’t think it is fair to compare them though. It is much easier to make a 2 door sports coupe look great over a 5 door sedan.

Nope, i8 is immensely more fashionable than the Tesla. The BMW will turn more heads from the interior to the exterior, and garner more compliments than the Tesla.

The beauty of the Voltec technology is as batteries improve, you only need to replace the battery, to get a broad range of better performance.

And you spread the current low volume of battery production to more cars.

Well designed car with many good reviews, and of course, BMW engineering. Probably the best vehicle in it’s class luxury/hybrid.

Hmm… The BMWi 8 PHEV, at $40,000++ more then the Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid PHEV and almost twice the price of the Cadillac ELR Extended Range Electic Vehicle and Tesla Model S 60 kWh, it better be the best, for the money. By the way, many auto reviewers are driving in exhilerating EV Mode for the first time. Avoiding anything to do with models of the EV’s 1st Wave that officially released for US national sales in November of 2011. They are finally seeing the pure Electric Fueled driving pleasure that has never grown old to us over these last couple of years. One last point. The BMW i8’s 1.5L 3cy turbo is just 1/10 of a liter larger then the Chevy Volt EREV’s 55,000 wHt peak generating 1.4 Liter naturally aspirated engine. But the motor sound, I know is off the charts!
