Some electric vehicle owners in the UK will now be able to enjoy one more perk.  Discounted auto insurance.

As of right now, insurance group Admiral is offering a 10% discount to owners of the Nissan LEAF and Peugeot iOn.  Were not entirely sure why Admiral limits the discount to just these two autos, but here’s Admiral managing director, Sue Longthorn, explaining why the insurer decided to offer this additional incentive:

“Electric cars are becoming more popular, with new models being launched all the time. The Government is boosting the growth in their popularity with grants towards purchasing electric cars and covering part of the cost of installing charging points for electric vehicles in garages and driveways, so we wanted to help encourage people to drive them by offering this discount.”

The discounted rate applies to both new and used LEAFs and iOns and it is automatic, meaning that you don’t have to apply to get the discount.

Unfortunately, Admiral only seems to service the UK and we’ve yet to hear of an auto insurer offering a similar discount in the US, but we’re still thrilled to know that even insurance can be added to the list of items that save money for electric vehicles owners.

It makes sense. Given the range of these cars I would guess that drivers average at least 10% fewer miles, too.
