MAR 8 2018 BY MARK KANE 13

Audi brought the pre-production prototype of e-tron to Geneva in camouflage, but we managed to spot it anyways.

Production of the all-electric Audi e-tron SUV is to begin at the end of this year. Before that happens, almost 250 prototypes are to be tested around the world.

The plan for thecoming months is to clock 5 million kilometers (over 3 million miles).

Some consider the Audi e-tron as the first real direct competitor to the Tesla Model X (although it seems that Jaguar I-Pace will take part of the pie too).

Audi promises fast charging capability of up to 150 kW via CCS Combo chargers.

The specifications for the concept included a 95 kWh battery for up to around 500 km (310 miles) of range, but we don’t know whether that numbers applies to the production model.

0-62 mph (100 km/h) is 4.6 seconds using a dual motor, all-wheel drive powertrain (370 kW total), which is not even enough to beat the Tesla Model X that’s available today.

So no news since Monday? Where are the interior pics!

Why do they insist on keeping big ugly non aerodynamic grilles?

Its the fake wood paneling of the 21st century.

Why should a closed grill be non aerodynamic?

Take a look at the bottom of a Boeing 737, which decided to leave out a door for its wheel bay in the interest of simplicity for regional routes. If the 737 can handle that without impact to aerodynamics, cars can handle a grille. A grille is an ornament and distinguishes a car from other cars. Audis in the early 80s had practically nonexistent grilles. That is not Audi’s brand identity in 2018. Most people like it that way with the big grille. Deal with it.

+1, also if you want to convert ICE lovers into BEV you have to give them something they are used to and they like, many thingsnin cars are Just ornaments. Think Rolls Royce. Let’s be honest 90% of the people here didn’t like the MX “grilleless” front end. Now that Tesla decided not to use grills anymore no one should?

Well I for one can’t wait to see the published CD and CDA Aero specs on this Audi SUV.

I suspect that they won’t be great and not optimizing Aero (because of design tradition or worries about the conservatism of your customers) is like throwing away free range for a PEV.

“Audi promises fast charging capability of up to 150 kW via CCS Combo chargers.”

If 150kw ccs chargers get installed, this could be real competition.

2018 is an exciting year, finally more luxury EV sedan and suv to choice from.

Model X has become Lexus RX in my area.

Not so fast.

Tesla is light years ahead with their charging infrastructure.

so tesla 0-60 times, when saying they’re such and such (like enough to beat the e-tron) are we talking about some special launch via button like that one that was being disabled after a handful of uses or are we talking normal launch times? I don’t follow the cars closely enough to be able to differentiate or keep track myself.

I think the e-Tron will sell much better than the i-pace. Similar to their ICE models, the i-Pace will the emotional choice for those who like Jaguars, but the audi will be the more mainstream model with bigger sales.

How many years have they been hyping this and other “e-Tron”s? I feel like it’s been over 3 years, and still they can’t even show it without test camouflage. Meanwhile Model X gonna be due for refresh soon, and Jaguar I-Pace is available to buy now. VAG is truly the masters of empty promises – always mere 2 years away no matter what year it is.
