Aston Martin Shows Off Battery For Upcoming RapidE

AUG 21 2018 BY STEVEN LOVEDAY 10

All we have is a tweet right now, but this is a pretty huge deal.

President and Group Chief Executive Officer at Aston Martin, Andy Palmer has officially revealed the first production intent battery for the automaker’s upcoming RapidE. He says that it’s an 800-volt system with the potential to be the first of its kind when the car arrives to market. Aston Martin plans to bring the car to production next year, with deliveries of some 155 copies prior to the end of 2019.

Palmer goes on to say that more information is yet to come. We sure hope so! He does reveal that the intent is for the RapidE to “have the ability to a have usable performance for laps of Nurburgring and a top speed of 155mph.” Palmer also confirms that kinetic energy and regenerative braking will be at work in the automaker’s upcoming (and first ever) EV.

The CEO has said in the past that the RapidE is geared toward electric vehicle buyers that are looking for “something above Tesla.” As more information becomes available, we will keep you updated. At this point, we only have rumors and speculation about the car’s anticipated specs, which include 800 horsepower and about 200 miles or range.

Hm, Rimac battery pack.

BoltUp

seems small?

Curious how that aligns with the rest of the vehicle. They obviously didn’t go for the skate-board design. It would be so interesting to learn which design choices were made there…

So they are putting the battery where the transmission tunnel would go and the other stuff where you’d expect a mid engine to sit. Leaving the floor clear helps in maintaining a low roof line. Good!

Mid engine? This doesn’t look like a mid-engined car at all. Pretty sure the bulky part actually goes under the hood.

So is this going to be like the Fisker Karma, with a central tunnel taking up the whole interior?

Looks similar to 1st gen Model S front end.

It looks like an Aston Martin front end. The Model S took some design hints of them though.

The big question with Andy Palmer at the head is will it have liquid cooling for 10x longer life than the LEAF that he insisted not have cooling?
Also will it need special 800 volt Fast Chargers like the Porsche Mission-E that is now called Taycan that also has a 800 v pack?

Some big tubes visible in the photo — pretty sure that’s liquid cooling.
