Apparently the effects of electrification are now being felt across all racing segments, as Carmelo Ezpeleta, the CEO of Dorna – the commercial rights holder for the motorcycling sport of MotoGP, has revealed that an electric class could be launched as early as 2019.

Mission RS

According to an interview, the project is already very advanced.

Dorna is considering five races, 10-laps each with some 18 electric motorcycles.

Like in the early days of the Formula E, the bikes would be all the same, with four manufacturers already offering to become that official supplier.

Sadly for now, these motorcycles will be slower than what could be had already these days (below Moto3 performances), with speeds of just around 200 km/h (124 mph).

Ezpeleta told Motorsport.com:

“The project is very advanced. It’s most likely that in 2019 we will have several support races [for MotoGP] in Europe.

“We already have four offers from brands on the table. It will be one-make, with all bikes the same, and the races will be a minimum of 10 laps long.”

Got to start somewhere…Why wouldn’t they greenlight all four makers to each make a bike?

  2. Ken says:

Id love to know the four brands making electric motorcycles. The only manufacturer that has made more than a handful of prototypes is Zero. And they’ve been selling them since 2006. And they must not even be one of the brands considered because their bikes don’t go 124mph. Alta just started production and their bikes dont go 124mph. Are they talking about Lightning, Energica or Lito?

You would think Honda (Mugen) would be in that list, they have after been competing very well in the Isle of Man for quite some time now, The Shinden is upto the roku (version 6) now.

I was just about to post the same thing. That thing looks sooo sharp … If ZERO made a bike like that it would sell like hotcakes, even at three times the price of a ZERO RS. I remember when Mission presented that bike people were sending them blank checks.
