Mercedes-Benz AMG Project One Is World’s Most Radical Plug-In


We’ve now been able to confirm that one of the world’s most radical upcoming cars, the Mercedes-AMG Project One, does indeed plug in.

The Mercedes-AMG Project One will cost €2.275 million plus taxes ($2.43 million USD) and it’s set for its grand reveal at the Frankfurt Motor Show this Fall. Sales will begin in mid-2018 and production will be extremely limited (275 units in total).

Up until now, Mercedes had’t officially made it known that Project One is a plug-in. Instead, the automaker danced around the fact, stating something like this (via Autocar):

“Project One use both forms of energy recovery system found in modern F1 cars: the MGU-K that converts mechanical and heat energy into electrical energy that can be stored for later deployment, and the MGU-H system that takes heat from the exhaust and uses it to create electrical energy.”

However, AMG boss Tobias Moers made this statement recently:

“Beyond that, we expect to develop a special program to support owners, but using the car will not be as complicated as many prospective customers seem to expect. Because of the F1 technology in the car, people are asking me “will I need a support crew or dedicated fuel to run it,” – and my answer is always no. This will be a street car. You keep it plugged in in the garage. You fill it with ’98’ when you buy fuel. That’s it.”

The electric-only range for Project One is listed at up to 18 miles (likely NEDC), a decent figure. Project One is as radical as they come though. This AWD beast seats two and has a 1.6-liter engine that redlines over 10,000 rpm.

It’s certainly not a vehicle for the faint of heart and yeah, it’s not that practical, but still we’re thrilled to discover that it’s a plug-in, which basically proves to us that in order to make the most advanced road-going car in the world, you’re gonna need a plug.

Well finally Mercedes came up with an affordable mass production car for the billionaires struggeling to make ends meet every month! And it even recoveres some of the heat from the exhaust system to convert to electricity! So much better than simply putting in an superior technology that does not produce exhaust fumes in the first place. Doesn’t have to be as fancy as a flux-compensator running on plutonium, an powerful electric motor equipped with a large battery would be fine.
The money that went into this development could have been spent more wisely, in a product that would be competitive to, say, a Tesla Model S. (Considering the lost market share of the Mercedes S-class in key markets over the past years)

Yes, lets recover a few % points of wasted heat, convert it to mechanical, which reduces the recover more.
Say making an ice 24% efficient, though, as you suggest, why not just go all electric with 90% efficiency.
A boondoggle, and just another indicator of the twilight of the ice. Projects of desperation, such as this, will continue to arise, in the next few years, as and companies invested heavily in the legacy auto industry will struggle mightily to sell their inferior products.
Though perhaps they will develop a few systems that make the ice a bit more palatable, but it’s too little too late.

I think I saw the Viper II, is out. They are making 300 of those too. It’s pretty impressive, but it’s just the pinnacle, that precedes the inevitable and final decline.

Only 18 miles NEDC, which means an even lower real-world (or EPA) range?

This is a use of the word “decent” with which I am not familiar!

Right? ‘Decent,’ in this context, brilliant..
