2017 Nissan LEAF: Lower Cost Of Entry For 107 Miles Of Driving/30 kWh Battery

The 2017 Nissan LEAF is coming to U.S., although as of yet there is still no sign of a new/longer range version, or any otherwise big changes in the powertrain/charging abilities.  A fact that is likely to change after the upcoming autoshow season in the US.

Of special interest with Nissan’s announcement of the 2017 LEAF lineup, is the deletion of the base 24 kWh version, leaving only the newer 30 kWh battery across all trim levels – S, SV and SL.

Truthfully, there isn’t enough features to justify all 3 levels now with only the one battery choice…it is almost like the company is placeholding room for another option in the future by not paring down the lineup for this year.

But more significant than the removal of the base battery option, is a major price change, as entry into the 30 kWh/107 mile range option has decreased by ~$3,500 as the “S” model gets upgraded battery.

Current prices for 2017 LEAF (30 kWh) stands at:

  • S     $31,545 ($30,680 + $865 D&H) – $24,045 after tax credit
  • SV   $35,065 ($34,200 + $865 D&H) – $27,565 after tax credit
  • SL   $37,655 ($36,790 + $865 D&H) – $30,155 after tax credit

Previously base 2016 LEAF (S 24 kWh and SV 30 kWh):

  • 24 kWh    $29,860 ($29,010 + $850 D&H) – $22,360 after tax credit
  • 30 kWh    $35,050 ($34,200 + $850 D&H) – $27,550 after tax credit

In other words, the 30 kWh LEAF is 10% cheaper in the 2017 model year than it was in 2016, but it’s also the least equipped S.    Every except the base model (SV/SL) come equipped with 6.6 kW Level 2 charging and DC fast charging (are you listening GM with the Chevy Bolt EV?)

For other news, Nissan has now sold more than 100,000 LEAFs in U.S. and over 238,000 worldwide.

Nissan announces U.S. pricing for 2017 LEAF

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Nissan today announced U.S. pricing for the 2017 Nissan LEAF, which is on sale now at LEAF Certified Nissan dealers nationwide. The Nissan LEAF continues to be the best-selling 100-percent electric vehicle in the U.S. and the world, with more than 100,000 units sold in the U.S. and more than 238,000 units worldwide (as of October 2016).

For 2017, Nissan provides best-in-class range1 across all three trim levels – S, SV and SL – by offering the 30 kWh battery that was previously only available on LEAF SV and SL grades. Along with the 100-mile plus range, the 30 kWh battery can be quick-charged to 80 percent (from the low battery charge warning) in about 30 minutes. Charging on a home charging system (Level 2, 240V) is estimated to take about six hours with the 6.6 kW onboard charger.

The 30 kWh battery design adds capacity without increasing battery package size by improving the cell structure of the laminated lithium-ion battery cells. Improved electrode material with revised chemistry results in higher power density and enhanced battery durability upon charge and discharge.

Nissan offers a limited warranty3 covering defects in materials or workmanship for eight years or 100,000 miles, whichever comes first, for the lithium-ion battery pack. Nissan also provides a limited warranty against battery capacity loss below nine bars of capacity as shown on the vehicle’s battery capacity level gauge for the first eight years or 100,000 miles for all models.

About the 2017 Nissan LEAF
All 2017 LEAF models feature a high-response, 80kW AC synchronous motor that generates 107 horsepower and 187 lb-ft of torque, providing a highly responsive, fun-to-drive experience that consumers often expect from traditional, gasoline-powered vehicles.

LEAF offers the space and range to meet every day needs while also providing an exceptional value proposition due to zero spending on gas, lower maintenance costs and a starting price after tax incentives competitive with a comparable gas-powered car.

The distinctive exterior styling is characterized by sharp, upright V-shaped design featuring long, up-slanting halogen headlights. LED low beam headlights and fog lights are standard on LEAF SL models. Other exterior features include standard rear spoiler, flat underbody with rear diffuser and aerodynamically shaped LED taillights. The charge port is hidden under a small door located in the front of the vehicle, with a standard light and door lock feature. The aerodynamic design results in a low coefficient of drag of just 0.28.

Inside, the digital instrument panel includes a speedometer, battery temperature gauge, power meter, remaining energy gauge, capacity level gauge, distance-to-empty display and drive mode indicator. A percent state-of-charge display is featured in the trip computer. LEAF SV and SL models also display “reachable area,” as well as showing a selection of nearby charging stations on the NissanConnect info screen.

All grade levels include standard Bluetooth® Hands-free Phone System and RearView Monitor. Nissan’s advanced Around View® Monitor4, which helps provide a virtual 360-degree view of objects around the vehicle, is offered as part of the Premium Package for SV and SL grades. The Premium Package also includes the seven-speaker Energy Efficient Series Bose® premium audio system.

For 2017, LEAF SV and SL grades include standard NissanConnectSM with Navigation– featuring a 7.0-inch color display with multi-touch control, Nissan Voice Recognition for navigation and audio, HD radio, SiriusXM® Traffic and SiriusXM® Travel LinkTM for weather, fuel prices, movie listings, stock info and sports (SiriusXM® subscription required, sold separately). The charging screen information is automatically updated every time the ignition is turned on and with every 12 miles of driving.

The NissanConnect EV system (no-charge subscription required), which is also standard on SV and SL grades, allows remote connection to the vehicle, providing monitoring of battery state-of-charge, start charging event control and turning on the heating and air conditioning system prior to entering the vehicle.

Nissan LEAF safety features include six air bags, four-wheel Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC) and Traction Control System (TCS).

LEAF is assembled in the U.S. at Nissan’s Vehicle Assembly Plant in Smyrna, Tennessee, with battery assembly taking place next door in Nissan’s Battery Assembly Plant.

Table shows S comes with standard 3.3 kW L2 and 6.6kW + DCFC to be optional. Old Leaf was $1200 option for 6.6kW+DCFC, not sure if that’s the same. Bolt comes with 7.2kW L2 standard with DCFC as $750 option.

And many of us have said it before we don’t want DCFC on our Bolt 🙂

Those that do can pony up the $750! I mean it isn’t like it is a reasonably priced option for those that do…

You would be crazy to not get the fast charging option, even if just for resale purposes.

Good point, when the lease is over, and the car is returned, resale is no longer his concern. I can’t believe for a minute, that GM will have the resale market waiting for the non DC quick charge, 3 year old Lease returns, when they become available. Any Bolt Lease should come with DC quick charge. GM shareholders are going to have to depreciate these vehicles significantly more, to move them at auction! GM at its best, once again helping to throttle back adoption of pure EVs.

I don’t know how Nissan or even specific Nissan dealers lease cars but when I leased my old Volt I didn’t get to spec one out, have it built and then pick it up.

The dealer essentially had a number of Volts available to lease with different specs. I would assume under this model the dealer wouldn’t offer even a base Leaf S without the quick charge option added with the fear that possibly no one would want to lease it and it would just sit on the lot or that if they did it would be difficult to unload after the lease is up.

Don’t make the common error in thinking GM or Nissan or for that matter any legacy car maker cares about selling EVs; They don’t care what they sell as long as the CEO makes the numbers Wall Street expects. As a fact, the Auto makers have already lobbied Trump to cancel all the Federal environmental requirements.

Only Tesla has a mission that includes accelerating sustainability of the Earth’s resources. The rest could care less and will only respond to Laws and rules as necessary. Only the progressive states will stand in the way of the auto makers completely dumping EVs. Look for the Federal Government and the states under Republican control to dump all the EV rules and regulations they can. Some predict a fossil fuel free for all.

Why? Can’t you add it on afterwards? And yes there is always the lease crowd…

It’s like putting an automatic transmission on a manual transmission vehicle, or adding a turbo charger to IC Engine.

An upgrade to 6.6 kW charging and DC charging requires removing the 3.6 charger and a bunch of high voltage rewiring. (hint: requires replacing the top two boxes stacked on the LEAF motor). Labor cost alone will likely cost more than the hardware needed to be replaced. This is why DC offered only as s factory option.

Note: all 2016 S30’s and current S30 inventory have DC QC option installed. It looks like Nissan only offers S30 without DC QC as a custom order. (dealer, or individual)

This is in line with what I expect: Nissan will stick with the 30 kwh battery for 2017 model year. Price drop and incentives to keep it somewhat competitive. Then Gen 2 appearing as an early 2018 model.

The 3 trim levels, 1 battery size, is the same situation for much of the Leaf’s history.

Since Nissan says the 30 kWh pack fits in the same space, when will they announce that pre-2016 model year Leafs can be retrofitted with that pack? And what is the cost for that?

Idoubt that will be an option for many years.

It would make more sense for them to offer an upgrade to a ~40kWh down the road. The upgrade from 24 to 30 kWh might not seem like a valuable option for most.

I’d love to have a 40kwh pack too, but for someone with an old degraded battery, upgrading to a 30kwh with the newer “lizard” chemistry would make a big difference.

Hopefully the 2017 Leafs don’t last very long. Early summer for the 200 mile range units at the very least.

Yeah, Nissan is buying time with the 2017 Leaf, ( another 6-8 months ) here in the US. This Summer should see an approximately 200 mi range, Chevy Bolt competitor. The stranded 2016 30kWh Leafs (with over a year old build date 10/15+) on dealer lots, can be had for around $18k, deliv+ TTL out the door, if you can qualify for most or all of the incentives here in Southern California.

That’s a reasonable price for an 86 mile NEV.

Let’s leave out the obvious aside on the battery specs;

how they compare side-by-side otherwise?

Once more. Rumor is new 41 kWh battery option coming very soon. Next year – all new car. Old Leaf will continue to be sold alongside new model. Two cars, two price points.

Nice car but very weak battery. In hot areas like South of the Mason Dixson line they battery degrades like no other. It has no cooling.
Other cars have 20-30 year battery life with no capacity loss. That makes a world of difference if you buy .

This hasn’t been true for four years. Why say things that aren’t true. Lizard batteries have been holding up just fine. The ’11s and ’12s suffered faster than expected battery loss, but Nissan has since corrected the problem.

I think you need to include early 2013 models too. My March-2013-built leaf has lost 25% of its original battery capacity after 60k miles in Raleigh NC. The forums seem to suggest I bought one month too early.

I feel bad for the leaf, it’s worst competition is used leafs. Nice, CPO, ones run 9-15k in the Seattle-Portland region. It seems hard to justify spending ~25-30k for a new one with such a weak used market.

Nissan have to be joking here! Sure you can still sell a 100 mile NEV but it needs to be priced accordingly. These prices worked when the LEAF was the only game in town but that’s not how it is anymore.

300 miles is comfortable
400 miles is luxury

If Nissan wants to sell full price vehicles they need to have a full price range.

Your opinion. Many cannot afford a $30k+ car and do not pay enough in taxes to take advantage of the tax credit. Also, it is well established that 100+ miles of EV range is adequate for daily use for most people (whether they realize it or not). Nissan is the only manufacturer that is addressing this market.

But you don’t just want it for some daily use. If you are going to invest in something as expensive as a car you want it to handle pretty much everything you might need it for.

A 100 mile Nissan LEAF is a car that is twice as expensive as a similar gas car with much less utility. Of course that isn’t very attractive. The car needs to be cheaper AND have longer range.

When it comes to 100 miles of range for that matter, that only applies on sunny days when the car is new. 5 years down the road in the middle of cold winter those 100 miles are rapidly going to diminish to half that or less. You need the spare capacity to handle the less favorable conditions you can find yourself in.

If EVs are seriously supposed to replace gas cars they need to be as good as gas cars. The current Nissan LEAF is not, at a higher price to boot.

Just because you have your metrics doesn’t mean they are everyone else’s metrics. The current Leaf is plenty adequate for daily use. Add in the gas savings and the maintenance savings and it makes a fine commuter vehicle. Try for just a moment to accept that there are people out there who are willing to accept 107 miles of range while saving $6,000.

If you believe this echo chamber, the only metric that matters is range. Price matters, too.

The 2017 Leaf will be the fastest depreciating car ever. You’d have to really enjoy throwing money away to buy it. I bet Nissan will be losing a ton of money on it. They really need to get their act up quickly!
